Getting around
The metro is the fastest way to cross the city, while buses, trams and trolleybuses also reach the less well-served areas. To save money on frequent trips, consider the Podorozhnik rechargeable card, which can be bought at metro stations. Stops and signs are often in Cyrillic: save the destination names in Russian too or use an offline maps app. Taxis booked through apps are convenient, but check service availability and the payment method before setting off. In summer, check the bridge opening times over the Neva: at night, some are raised and can interrupt travel between the two banks.
When to go
The most atmospheric period is between June and July, during the White Nights, when the sky stays bright for a long time and the city comes alive with events. May and September offer pleasant days and, generally, fewer crowds. Winter is harsh and the days are short, but it brings a special atmosphere: bring warm clothes, waterproof shoes and layers suited to the cold.
Where to eat
To sample the local cuisine, look for restaurants and cafés serving borsch, pel’meni, bliny and fish-based dishes. Covered markets and casual lunch counters often offer informal, affordable options; along Nevsky Prospekt and in the central districts the choice is wider, but prices can be higher. Check the menu and prices before ordering, especially in places that are very popular with visitors.
