Day 1

From Ancient Rome to the historic center

09:00–20:30 Brisk but balanced

Discover the main archaeological monuments and piazzas of the historic center on a route that is mostly on foot.

09:00

Colosseum

Spend about 90 minutes at the amphitheatre, taking in the arena and seating areas if they are accessible with your ticket type. Book a timed entry slot: standard admission typically costs around €18–25, while special tours and add-on services may cost more. Arrive a little early for security checks.

Bring an ID if required for a named ticket, and check the rules on bags and permitted items in advance.

10:45

Roman Forum and archaeological area

Head to the entrance to the archaeological area and follow the marked route through the Roman Forum. Allow about two hours, stopping at the Via Sacra, the arches and the remains of the main public buildings. Admission may be included with a combined Colosseum ticket; check the terms, validity and entry arrangements when booking. The ground is uneven and some areas are exposed to the sun.

Comfortable shoes, water and a hat are especially useful in the warmer months.

13:00

Lunch in the Monti neighbourhood

Leave the archaeological area and walk to Monti in about 10–15 minutes. For lunch, choose a trattoria or casual eatery: budget around €15–30 per person for a simple meal, with prices varying depending on the menu and drinks. An hour-long break gives you time to rest before heading to the city centre.

Check the menu displayed outside and ask about cover charges before sitting down.

14:30

Transfer and visit to the Pantheon

From Monti, walk to the Pantheon in about 25–30 minutes, or take a city bus if you’d rather save your energy, checking routes and journey times in real time. Allow 40–60 minutes for your visit and admire the great dome, the oculus and the monumental tombs. Admission may require a ticket: budget around €5–10 and check the latest prices, opening hours and entry arrangements.

Queues may form at peak times; follow the rules on silence and dress.

16:00

Piazza Navona

About a five-minute walk from the Pantheon brings you to Piazza Navona, built on the footprint of the ancient Stadium of Domitian. Stroll among the fountains and admire the Fountain of the Four Rivers and the façade of the church of Sant’Agnese in Agone. The square is free to visit; if you stop at a café nearby, expect prices to be generally higher than on less touristy streets.

Take a few minutes to explore the side streets too, which are often quieter than the square.

17:00

Stroll through the historic centre

Take your time wandering through the city centre’s streets, passing alleyways and small squares on your way to the Trevi Fountain: the walk takes about 15–20 minutes. Stop for a gelato or coffee, budgeting around €3–8, and watch out for cobblestones and traffic on streets shared with vehicles.

Use an offline map if you want to follow a walking route without detours.

18:00

Trevi Fountain

End your visit in front of the Trevi Fountain, admiring the sculptures and the scenic façade of Palazzo Poli. The fountain can be admired freely from the square; access to the perimeter near the basin instead follows the procedures indicated on the official channels, which should be checked beforehand. The area can be very crowded and it is not allowed to go into the water. In the evening, the fountain is atmospheric with the lights on too, so you can stay until sunset or early evening.

Keep a close eye on your wallet and phone in the busiest spots.

19:00

Dinner nearby

End the day with dinner in the historic centre, or walk a few blocks away for more choice and often more reasonable prices. For dinner at a trattoria, budget around €20–40 per person, depending on the restaurant, courses and drinks. If you need to catch a train or reach another area, allow enough time for the journey and check evening transport connections in advance.

Booking is recommended, especially on weekends and during peak season.

Practical tips

  • Book the Colosseum in advance and carefully check your time slot and the terms of the combined ticket.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: the route includes uneven paving and several kilometers of walking.
  • Bring water and sun protection; in summer, limit long stops in the more exposed archaeological areas.
  • Before setting off, check opening hours, any closures and the access rules for the monuments.
