Built by the Ottomans in the 16th century, the fortress overlooks the port of Pylos and offers splendid views of Navarino Bay. Inside, you’ll also find historic buildings and exhibition spaces.

Its nearly circular bay, lined with dunes and crystal-clear waters, is one of the most iconic landscapes in Messinia. From the beach, you can walk to Nestor’s Cave and the castle of Paleokastro.
This protected wetland is a refuge for numerous species of migratory birds, including flamingos. Trails and observation points let you explore it without disturbing the wildlife.
The great Venetian fortress of Methoni stretches out toward the sea and preserves its walls, bastions, and distinctive access bridge. Its striking Bourtzi, a fortified tower, stands on a small islet connected to the castle.
The island partly closes off Navarino Bay and was the setting for major historical events, from the Peloponnesian War to the Battle of Navarino. Its shores and memorial monuments can be discovered on boat trips.

Getting around
The center of Pylos can be explored comfortably on foot, but to reach beaches and archaeological sites it is useful to have a car. The town is connected to Kalamata by KTEL buses, but services can be infrequent: check the updated timetables before setting off. To visit the , near Chora, a car is the most practical option; alternatively, you can consider a taxi. In summer, allow extra time to find parking in the busiest areas.
When to go
Spring and early autumn offer pleasant temperatures and are ideal for visiting the archaeological sites and the coast with fewer crowds. From June to September the weather is hot and the sea is inviting, but August is the busiest period. In the height of summer, plan outdoor visits for the cooler hours and bring water and sunscreen.
Where to eat
In Pylos you will find tavernas and restaurants, especially around the harbor and the center, where you can try fish, seafood, and traditional Messinian dishes.
