Chortiatis Holocaust Monument
The memorial commemorates the victims of the Chortiatis massacre of 1944, one of the most painful episodes in the region’s history. A visit offers a moment of reflection and helps visitors understand the community’s memory.

How to get around
Pylea, Panorama, and Chortiatis are connected to Thessaloniki by city buses, but frequencies and travel times vary depending on the area and the time of day. Check the routes and updates on the local operator’s website before setting off. A car is convenient for getting between the different centers and reaching the mountain areas, where public transport connections may be less frequent. On the uphill roads of Panorama and Chortiatis, allow extra time and drive carefully, especially in winter. Taxis and ride-hailing apps can be useful in the evening or for trips not directly served by buses.
When to Go
Spring and autumn are ideal for strolling around and exploring the area in mild temperatures. Summer is hot, but the elevation of Chortiatis can offer a cooler climate than central Thessaloniki. In winter, temperatures can drop and it may snow in the hills: check road conditions before setting off. If you want to combine your visit with Thessaloniki, also consider the city’s events and seasonal openings.
Where to Eat
In Pylea and Panorama you’ll find tavernas, cafés, and restaurants, while in Chortiatis the choice is more limited and centered on traditional cuisine. Look for places serving meze, grilled meats, and seasonal Greek specialties; for a wider selection, downtown Thessaloniki is easy to reach. On weekends, the busiest restaurants can get crowded, so it’s worth booking ahead. Check opening hours in advance, especially in the smaller centers.
