Day 1 – Memory, historic center and greenery in Pitești

10:00–19:00 Moderate, with urban walks

Learn about Pitești's recent history and collections, then end the day among the park's trails.

10:00

Pitești Prison Memorial

Spend about 1–1.5 hours at the memorial to delve into the prison's history and the repression of the communist period through the exhibition spaces and materials. From the center, it can be reached on foot or by a short taxi ride, depending on your starting point. Allow an estimated cost of 0–20 RON for admission or any contributions.

Check the official website or the venue itself for visiting arrangements, access, and tickets.

12:00

Argeș County Museum

Reach the museum with a short walk from the memorial and set aside about 1.5–2 hours for the region’s history, archaeology, and natural science collections. Take a close look at the exhibits that tell the story of the Argeș area from antiquity to more recent times. Budget around 10–30 RON for admission, with possible different rates for exhibitions or sections.

Lunch can be arranged at one of the places in the center before continuing on to the park.

15:00

Trivale Park and the Trivale Hermitage

From the center, reach the park by taxi or public transport and allow 2–3 hours to stroll along the tree-lined avenues and make your way to the hermitage. The ground can be uneven in some sections: choose comfortable shoes and keep a relaxed pace. The walk in the park is generally free; allow 0–10 RON for any incidental expenses.

Leave time for a break in the greenery and check on-site for any directions regarding access to the hermitage.

Day 2 – Golești and the heritage of Curtea de Argeș

09:00–18:00 Sightseeing day with car transfers

Explore the rural culture of Argeș and two important historical and religious sites in Curtea de Argeș.

09:00

Golești Viticulture and Fruit Growing Museum

From Pitești, reach Golești by car in about 20–30 minutes, allowing some extra time for traffic; visit the open-air complex for about 2 hours. Among traditional buildings, agricultural objects, and evidence of viticulture and fruit growing, you can grasp the link between the landscape and everyday life in the region. Allow roughly 10–30 RON for the ticket.

Check the official website for access arrangements to the different sections and the availability of guided visits.

12:00

Curtea de Argeș Monastery

Continue by car to Curtea de Argeș: the journey takes around 50–70 minutes, depending on traffic. Dedicate 1.5–2 hours to the complex to admire the rich exterior decoration, architectural details, and monastery grounds, while respecting the religious character of the place. Access may be free or may involve fees for specific visits: consider 0–20 RON as a rough guide.

Plan a lunch break in Curtea de Argeș and check any dress code and access rules.

16:00

Biserica Domnească Sfântul Nicolae

Head to the church in the center of Curtea de Argeș, with a short drive or walk depending on where you parked. Set aside about an hour to appreciate the medieval structure and the artistic details preserved inside, if they are accessible during your visit. Allow for an estimated cost of 0–15 RON for admission or contributions, but don’t assume it will apply.

Spend the night in Curtea de Argeș so you can set off the next day already on the Argeș Valley route.

Day 3 – The Argeș Valley: Vidraru and Poenari Fortress

08:30–18:30 Challenging, with a guide and a hike up

Reach the sweeping mountain views of Vidraru and end the trip with the climb to Poenari Fortress, if it is accessible.

10:30

Barajul Vidraru

From Curtea de Argeș, drive onto the road that climbs up the Argeș Valley; the journey can take around 1–1,5 hours, but it depends on traffic and road conditions. Spend 45–75 minutes at the dam and the accessible viewpoints, without stopping in unauthorized areas. The exterior visit may not have a specific fee; even so, keep a budget of 0–20 RON for any services or access that may be available.

Before setting off, check road conditions, the weather, and seasonal access; do not assume all spots are reachable.

12:30

Cetatea Poenari

From the dam, continue by car for about 15–25 minutes to the fortress area, then assess the climb only after confirming that access is allowed. The route involves a long staircase, traditionally said to have around 1.480 steps: allow at least 2–3 hours for the ascent, visit, and descent, and bring water and shoes with good grip. For any admission, estimate 10–40 RON; the amount and access conditions should be checked before visiting.

If the fortress or staircase are not accessible, do not attempt unmarked alternative routes; allow time to return to Curtea de Argeș or Pitești.

Practical tips

  • Check official information in advance for visiting hours, tickets and accessibility at museums, monasteries and the fortress: the itinerary shows suggested time slots, not guaranteed opening hours.
  • For Golești, Vidraru and Poenari, consider a car or private transfer; agree in advance on return times and any stops.
  • For the climb to Cetatea Poenari, bring water, suitable shoes and sun protection, and check weather conditions and access to the trail before setting off.
  • Keep some time in reserve for traffic and road conditions in the Argeș Valley; if the road or the fortress is inaccessible, skip the climb and follow local advice.
