In the heart of Piazza IV Novembre, this 13th-century fountain is one of the masterpieces of Italian medieval sculpture. Its reliefs depict biblical scenes, the months of the year, and moments from everyday life.
PerugiaUmbria · Italy
One destination.
A thousand ways to live it.
Perched on the hills of Umbria, Perugia captivates visitors with its medieval historic center, Etruscan origins, and views opening onto the surrounding countryside. Between scenic squares, charming alleys, and artistic treasures, it offers a journey rich in history and character.
Worth seeing, worth remembering.
An imposing Gothic building overlooking Corso Vannucci, it has for centuries been one of the symbols of civic power. Inside are the National Gallery of Umbria and the Sala dei Notari.
Cathedral of San Lorenzo
Overlooking Piazza IV Novembre, the cathedral houses works of art and chapels of great interest. Its unfinished façade facing the square gives it a particularly distinctive look.
The fortress commissioned by Pope Paul III now conceals a fascinating underground route through streets and spaces of ancient Perugia. The escalators that run through it connect the modern city to the historic center.
Etruscan Arch
Also known as Porta Augusta, it is one of the most striking monumental gateways in the ancient Etruscan walls. Its imposing stones tell the story of the city’s very ancient origins.
Basilica of San Pietro
This Benedictine complex stands out for its richly decorated interior, adorned with works by Umbrian and Italian artists. From the bell tower and the surrounding areas, beautiful views open over the city and the valley.

Getting around
The historic center is best explored on foot, but the hills and cobblestone streets call for comfortable shoes. Escalators and mechanized walkways connect some parking areas to the center; the minimetrò is useful for reaching the center from the station area and from several parking lots. If you arrive by car, check the ZTL rules and choose parking outside the city walls. To get around the towns of Umbria, you can use train and bus connections, checking timetables and transfers before you set off.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are usually ideal for strolling and visiting the surrounding area, with milder temperatures. Summer brings the city to life with events such as Umbria Jazz, but it can be hot and more crowded: book ahead if you are traveling during the festivals. In autumn, Eurochocolate usually takes place, though the dates may vary from year to year. Winter is quieter, but it brings cold days and possible rain.
Where to eat
To sample the local cuisine, look for trattorias and osterias in the center serving torta al testo stuffed with fillings, umbricelli, and dishes from Umbrian tradition. Cold cuts, cheeses, and legumes are often the stars of the menu, alongside regional wines such as those from the Colli Perugini. For a sweet break, Perugia is famous for chocolate: in addition to pastry shops, you can visit artisanal chocolate shops. During event periods, it is best to book or eat outside peak hours.
Quick tips
- 01Wear comfortable shoes: the historic center has hills, steps, and uneven paving.
- 02Check minimetrò, bus, and parking schedules and fares in advance, especially in the evening and on holidays.
- 03If you visit during Umbria Jazz or Eurochocolate, book accommodation and restaurants early and check the updated dates.
- 04Bring a light jacket even in the shoulder seasons: the weather can change and evenings are cool.
Wake up in the right place.
