3 days / 2 nights · Mountains, marble, archaeology, monasteries, sea
The itinerary uses Penteli as a base to explore, without constant back-and-forth travel, the Pentelic Massif, the archaeological area of Marathon, and the eastern coast of Attica. The first day is devoted to the monastery, quarries, and mountain landscapes; the second follows the traces of the Battle of Marathon and reaches the lake and coastal park of Schinias. The third day combines a visit to the Monastery of Saint Ephrem with a stroll between Nea Makri and Rafina. A car is the most practical solution, while the opening hours of religious and cultural sites should be checked in advance.
Day 1 · Walking · 6.5 km · 103 min · Source: Mapbox · walking
Discover the religious heritage and the ancient marble-making tradition of Mount Penteli without taking on demanding hikes.
09:00
Penteli Monastery
Set aside about an hour for the monastery complex and the areas open to visitors, while respecting the silence and dress code. Entry is generally free, but a small donation is appreciated; opening hours may change during services and holidays.
Check the opening hours before you go and bring a scarf or a garment that covers your shoulders.
10:30
The marble quarries of Penteli
Drive to the area of the historic quarries, source of the Pentelic marble used in major monuments of ancient Athens. Spend 45–60 minutes observing the faces visible from the outside: access to some areas may be prohibited or depend on local conditions. The exterior visit normally does not require a ticket.
Do not cross fences or signs: this is a work area and the ground may be unstable.
12:00
Lunch in Palaia Penteli
Head back toward the center of Palaia Penteli for a break at a taverna or café. Allow about an hour and a half; a simple meal can cost around 12–22 EUR per person, drinks excluded or included depending on the place.
In high season, it’s a good idea to book ahead, especially on weekends.
14:00
Davelis Cave and a walk in the surroundings
Approach the cave area with hiking shoes and treat the visit as an outdoor excursion, not as a developed cave attraction. From the access point, plan on about 1–2 hours in total, depending on the route and conditions; do not enter dark or unstable passages. There is no entrance fee for the outdoor area.
Bring water, a hat, and a flashlight only as a precaution: it does not replace proper caving equipment.
17:00
Scenic return and coffee break
End the day with a stop at a café in Penteli and, if the weather is clear, a short scenic drive on the accessible roads of the massif. Keep the schedule flexible: after rain or during the hottest hours, it’s better to cut back on walking. Coffee and dessert usually cost around 4–8 EUR.
Avoid driving on unmarked dirt tracks and head back before dark if you do not know the area.
Follow Marathon’s main historic landmarks and end between the artificial lake and the protected landscape of Schinias.
08:30
Transfer from Penteli to Marathon
Drive toward Marathon, allowing about 40–55 minutes depending on traffic. Public transport requires connections and takes longer, so it’s less convenient for linking all the sites in one day. Allow 5–15 EUR for fuel and parking in total, depending on the vehicle and route.
Before setting off, check traffic and parking: travel can slow down on weekends.
09:30
Archaeological Museum of Marathon
Set aside 60–90 minutes for the collections that trace the history of the region, from prehistory to the Roman era, and for the artifacts linked to the burial mound and local sanctuaries. Admission, where applicable, is generally around 3–8 EUR; fees and opening days may vary seasonally.
Check the official website for today’s opening hours and any weekly closures.
11:15
Tomb of the Athenians
Reach in just a few minutes the mound traditionally associated with the Athenian dead from the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC. The exterior visit takes about 30–45 minutes and lets you experience the site within its historical landscape; access may be free or subject to local rules.
Do not climb the mound and stay on the designated paths.
12:30
Lunch in Marathon
Stop in the town center for a simple lunch before continuing to the dam. A tavern meal costs roughly 15–25 EUR per person; a sandwich or snack may cost about 5–10 EUR.
Buy water here: shops are less convenient along the scenic stretches that follow.
14:00
Marathon Dam and Lake
Drive to Marathon Dam in about 15–20 minutes and admire the dam, faced with Pentelic marble, and the artificial reservoir from the outside. Allow 45–60 minutes for photo stops; there is usually no fee for the exterior visit, but access to facilities and technical paths may be restricted.
Park only in permitted spaces and do not approach closed areas.
16:00
Walk in Schinias
Continue by car to Schinias National Park, a mosaic of pine forest, wetlands, and coastline. Choose an accessible walking stretch and plan for 1–2 hours; entry to the natural area is generally free, while parking and beach facilities may have seasonal costs or fees.
Stay on the trails and respect protected areas, especially during nesting season.
Visit the Monastery of Saint Ephrem and enjoy the coastline between Nea Makri and the port of Rafina.
09:00
Monastery of Saint Ephrem
Reach the monastery by car from Penteli, usually allowing 35–50 minutes depending on traffic. Set aside about an hour to explore the areas open to pilgrims and the devotional setting; admission is normally free, but donations are optional.
Check the visiting hours and remember that some areas may not be accessible during services.
10:30
Stroll along the Nea Makri seafront
Head down to the seafront for an easy 45–60 minute walk among cafés, shops, and stretches overlooking the gulf. The walk is free; a drink at a café typically costs 3–6 EUR.
In summer, the seafront is busiest in the middle of the day and late afternoon.
12:00
Nea Makri Beach
Stop at Nea Makri Beach for a swim or a break by the shore, checking the sea conditions and available facilities on site. Beach access is usually free; sunbeds and an umbrella may cost around 10–25 EUR, depending on the beach club and season.
Bring reef sandals if you come across pebbly stretches.
13:30
Seafood lunch in Nea Makri
Have lunch in a seafront taverna, where fresh fish and Greek dishes make a great finish to this seaside stop. Budget about 20–35 EUR per person for a meal with a main dish and a drink; fish sold by weight can cost more.
Ask for the price of fish by weight before ordering.
15:30
Rafina Port
Reach Rafina by car in about 20–30 minutes and take a stroll around the harbor area, watching the ferries to the islands and the movement in the port. The visit is free; if you need to board a ferry, check the timetable and ticket price in advance, as they depend on the route, season, and vehicle.
Traffic may increase near ferry departures.
17:00
Kokkino Limanaki Beach
Wrap up with a stop at Kokkino Limanaki, a small cove near Rafina, ideal for one last swim or to admire the coastline. Allow about an hour; access is normally free, but the descent can be steep and sea conditions can change quickly.
Wear suitable shoes for the trail and do not go down if the sea is rough.
