Worth seeing, worth remembering.
The museum displays artifacts uncovered during the excavations, including famous mosaics, sculptures, and everyday objects. It is an ideal stop for a deeper understanding of the history and art of the city.
North of the main area are the remains of the vast palace complex, associated with the Macedonian rulers. Its size reflects the political and ceremonial role of the capital.

How to get around
The archaeological site and museum of Pella are located near the village of Pella, in the region of Central Macedonia. From Thessaloniki, they can be easily reached by car by following the signs for Giannitsa; the drive takes about an hour. Alternatively, you can take a bus to Giannitsa and continue by taxi, checking schedules and availability in advance. Visiting the excavations requires walking outdoors along paths that are partly uneven. A car is also useful for exploring the surrounding area, where public transport connections may be infrequent.
When to go
Spring and autumn are the most pleasant times, with temperatures generally suitable for visiting the outdoor excavations. In summer, the heat can be intense and shade limited: it’s best to arrive in the morning and bring water, a hat, and sunscreen. Winter is quieter, but it can be cold or rainy. Before you travel, check the updated opening hours of the museum and archaeological site, as they may vary by season.
Where to eat
In the village of Pella and nearby Giannitsa, you’ll find tavernas and eateries where you can sample Macedonian cuisine, with grilled meats, seasonal vegetables, cheeses, and home-style dishes. Giannitsa generally offers more choice, especially for a meal after your visit. Hours may be reduced out of season or on public holidays, so it’s worth checking in advance. If you visit the site during the hottest part of the day, bring water and a snack with you.
Quick tips
- 01Check the opening hours and any weekly closure of the museum and excavations before you leave.
- 02Wear comfortable shoes: the visit includes outdoor sections and surfaces that are not always even.
- 03In summer, bring water, a hat, and sunscreen; the archaeological paths offer little shade.
- 04If you are traveling without a car, arrange your transfer from Giannitsa in advance and check the return bus times.
