BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

How to get around

The metro is the most practical way to get around Beijing: it is extensive, affordable, and connects the airport with many of the main attractions. To enter the station and buy tickets, you’ll need to pass security checks, so allow a few extra minutes. Taxis and ride-hailing cars are booked through apps, but traffic can make getting around slow, especially during rush hour. Chinese addresses are useful to show the driver, and offline maps can help you find your way. To visit the Forbidden City or the Great Wall, check the connections in advance and whether any tickets or permits are required.

When to go

Spring and autumn are generally the most pleasant times, with mild temperatures: April and May, or September and October, are good months for sightseeing. Summer is hot, humid, and crowded, while winter can be very cold and windy. In spring, dusty days can occur; before you leave, check the forecast and air quality. During national holidays, especially the Golden Week at the beginning of October, attractions and transport can be very crowded.

Where to eat

To sample the local cuisine, look for restaurants specializing in Peking duck, jiaozi, and noodles, or explore the hutong alleyways and food markets. In places frequented by locals, you’ll often find regional dishes at reasonable prices; illustrated or translated menus can make ordering easier. Street stalls and markets offer a variety of specialties, but it’s best to choose busy spots where food is prepared fresh. If you have allergies or dietary needs, prepare a note written in Chinese to show the staff.

Quick tips

  1. Bring your passport with you: it may be required to buy tickets or enter some attractions.
  2. Set up digital payments compatible with your account before you leave, and also bring some cash.
  3. Download offline maps and check which apps and online services work in China; some websites and tools used abroad may not be accessible.
  4. Book the most popular attractions in advance and check the opening hours: some museums require booking with passport details.
