Guide to Pagheo
PAGHEO · ITINERARY

Pagheo (Kavala, East Macedonia and Thrace, Greece) in 7 days – Complete itinerary

7 days / 6 nights · Archaeology, mountains, villages, beaches, wine

This itinerary uses Kavala as a base to explore the city, the UNESCO site of Philippi, the slopes of Pagheo, and the beaches to the west with reasonable transfers. The first two days are devoted to the historic center and museums; then come an archaeological day and two days in the interior, with a mountain hike subject to suitable conditions and preparation. The last days alternate between the coast and wine culture, leaving room for breaks, meals, and travel. A rental car makes it much easier to reach the monastery, trails, and wineries, while in central Kavala it is best to get around on foot.

Day 1 – Kavala: aqueduct and upper town

09:30–20:30 Urban walks, moderate climbs

Get your bearings in historic Kavala on a walking route between the port, the Panagia peninsula, and the fortress.

09:30

Kamares and first loop through the center

Reach the Ottoman aqueduct on foot, one of Kavala’s most recognizable landmarks, and admire its arches from street level. Set aside about 30–40 minutes for photos and orientation; free exterior visit.

The streets of the old town are steep: comfortable shoes recommended.

10:30

Church of Saint Nicholas

Continue toward the church, linked to the memory of Saint Paul and the tradition of his arrival in the city. Enter only if it is open and no services are in progress; admission is usually free and takes about 20 minutes.

Respect the hours of worship and the required dress code.

11:15

House of Mohammed Ali

Head up to the Panagia district to visit the museum-house associated with Mohammed Ali, founder of modern Egypt and born in Kavala. Allow 30–45 minutes and an indicative fee of €3–€6, to be checked on site.

Opening hours may change; check before heading up.

12:15

Lunch in Panagia

Stop at a neighborhood taverna for fish, meze, or homemade Greek dishes. Expect €15–€25 per person for a simple meal with a drink; the panoramic terraces may cost more.

For lunch, in the summer months, it’s worth asking for a table in the shade.

14:00

Imaret

Admire this historic complex from the outside, or book guided access in advance, as it is now an accommodation property with regulated visiting arrangements. A guided visit, when available, may cost roughly €5–€15.

Do not assume free access to the interior spaces.

15:30

Kavala Fortress

Reach the castle by following the uphill alleys: from the walls there is a lovely view over the harbor and the gulf. Allow 45–60 minutes and an indicative ticket price of €4–€8; check opening times and seasonal schedules.

The ground inside can be uneven and not suitable for strollers.

19:00

Evening stroll along the seafront

Head back down to the port and end the day with a walk along the waterfront, choosing a restaurant between the port and the city center. For dinner, budget around €18–€30 per person, depending on the fish and wine you choose.

In high season, book ahead if you’d like to dine by the water.

Day 2 – Kavala: museums and city life

09:30–20:30 Cultural, with frequent breaks

Delve into the archaeological history and the tobacco trade, alternating visits with stops in the modern city center.

09:30

Archaeological Museum of Kavala

Spend the morning exploring collections that trace the region from prehistory to the Roman era, with artifacts also from the Philippi area and the sanctuary of Parthenon. Allow 60–90 minutes and expect an entrance fee of around €4–€8.

Check the weekly closing day before visiting.

11:15

Walk to the shopping district

Head on foot to the central streets, stopping for a Greek coffee or an espresso. A café break usually costs around €2–€5 and makes for a useful pause before the second museum.

The route is short, but in summer the sun can be intense.

12:00

Tobacco Museum of Kavala

Discover the role that tobacco processing and trade played in the city’s economic and social development. The visit takes about an hour; admission is typically €3–€6, with possible variations for exhibitions or guided tours.

Check the updated opening hours: they are not always the same as those of the archaeological museums.

13:30

Lunch in downtown Kavala

Choose a taverna or a casual spot to sample Macedonian specialties and fish. A lunch with a main course and a drink typically costs around €12–€22 per person.

Ask which dishes are prepared fresh that day.

15:30

Market and downtown streets

Spend a couple of hours wandering the shopping streets and downtown shops without following a strict itinerary. It’s a great chance to buy local products, sweets, or small souvenirs; purchases naturally depend on your personal budget.

Shop hours can slow down during the hottest part of the day and on public holidays.

18:30

Viewpoint and aperitif

Wrap up with a stroll to an accessible panoramic spot in the city center and an aperitif before dinner. Plan on about €5–€12 for a drink and snacks; choose a place with a view if the weather is clear.

Sunset varies by season: check the time for the day.

Day 3 – Philippi and Krinides: ancient history and springs

08:30–18:30 Outdoor visits, moderate walks

Explore the archaeological site of Philippi and the Christian landmarks in the area, with an optional stop at the thermal baths of Krinides.

08:30

Transfer from Kavala to Philippi

Set off by car toward Philippi: the drive is about 15 km and usually takes 20–30 minutes; alternatively, check local transport links, which are less flexible. Allow for fuel costs of around €5–€10 total, depending on the vehicle and route.

Bring water and a hat: much of the site is exposed to the sun.

09:00

Philippi Archaeological Site

Set aside at least two hours for the ancient city, a UNESCO-listed site, taking in the urban layout, the basilicas, and traces from different eras. Admission for the area and the accessible structures is typically around €8–€15; fees and access may change.

Check in advance whether a combined ticket with the museum is available.

11:30

Ancient Theatre of Philippi

Stop at the theatre, one of the most striking features of the complex, and take in its setting at the foot of the acropolis. Allow 30–45 minutes, depending on permitted access and any rehearsals or performances.

Do not climb onto closed or cordoned-off structures.

12:15

Archaeological Museum of Philippi

Take time to explore the finds and reconstructions before getting back in the car. A 45–60 minute visit helps you understand the outdoor ruins more clearly; admission may be included in the site ticket or charged separately.

The museum’s opening hours may follow a different schedule from the site.

13:30

Baptism of Saint Lydia

Make your way to the place of worship linked to the tradition of Lydia’s baptism, considered the first Christian in Europe. The visit is brief and generally free; remain respectful if services are taking place.

It’s useful to have a scarf or appropriate clothing for entering the church.

14:30

Lunch and the Krinides baths

Have lunch nearby with a budget of around €12–€20 per person, then consider the Krinides mud baths if they are operating and the season allows. Access to the thermal facilities may vary, roughly €5–€15; it is not an essential stop if you’d rather head back earlier.

Contact the facility in advance for season, availability, and usage conditions.

Day 4 – Eastern slope of Mount Pagheo and monastery

08:30–19:00 Scenic roads and stops in the villages

Discover the villages at the foot of Mount Pagheo and visit the Panagia Eikosifoinissa monastery, respecting local timing and customs.

08:30

Depart from Kavala toward Eleftheroupoli

Reach Eleftheroupoli by car in about 30–40 minutes, depending on traffic and your starting point. Use the town center as a stop for coffee and supplies; budget €3–€6 for a light breakfast.

Fill up before leaving the main roads.

09:30

Stroll in Eleftheroupoli

Explore the center and the streets around the square, observing the town’s daily life and buying water for the rest of the day. A stop of about an hour is enough; outdoor visits are free.

In the villages, shop opening hours may be reduced around midday.

10:45

Nikisiani

Continue to Nikisiani, a village at the foot of the massif, and wander among the houses and viewpoints over the countryside. Allow 45–60 minutes and a short café break of around €2–€5.

Local roads are narrow: park without blocking entrances.

12:00

Panagia Eikosifoinissa Monastery

Reach the monastery by following the mountain road and allowing time for the curves. Visiting the accessible areas is normally free; modest clothing and respectful behavior are essential.

Check religious schedules and road conditions before departure.

14:00

Lunch and return through the villages

Have lunch in a local taverna or stop back in Eleftheroupoli, with an estimated cost of €12–€22 per person. If the road and time allow, end with a short detour to Moustheni, a village known for its rural atmosphere and views of the Pangaio landscape.

Do not rely on very late meal times: in small towns and villages, choices can be limited.

Day 5 – Hike on Mount Pangaio and Mati Peak

07:00–17:30 Challenging, only with proper preparation

Experience the mountain landscape of Pangaio with a careful hike, adapted to the conditions and your own fitness level.

07:00

Weather check and departure

Before leaving Kavala, check the forecast, the condition of forest roads, and local trail information; if the weather is unstable, replace the hike with a walk through the villages. Bring water, snacks, and layered clothing; there is no entrance fee for the mountain.

For those unfamiliar with the trails, a local guide is recommended.

08:30

Access to the Pangaio massif

Reach the agreed starting point with your guide or as indicated by up-to-date local sources, without improvising detours on forest tracks. Transfer time depends on the side of the mountain and road conditions; budget roughly €10–€25 for fuel.

A car with suitable ground clearance can be useful, but it does not guarantee access to every track.

09:30

Trail and refuge on Pangaio

Take on the section to the refuge only if the trail is open and the group has the right pace and equipment. Walking times depend on the chosen route; any services or overnight stay at the refuge must be checked and booked directly.

Do not count on water or refreshments being available without confirmation.

12:00

Mati Peak, if conditions and preparation allow

Mati Peak is the day’s most ambitious goal: reach it only along a marked trail and leave enough time to get back before dark. Plan to bring a packed lunch, with an estimated cost of €5–€12 per person.

Give up on the summit if visibility, wind, or fatigue worsens.

15:00

Descent and return

Head back along the same route or as instructed by the guide, keeping a steady pace and avoiding shortcuts off the trail. Leave time for the transfer to Kavala and let someone know your plan and expected return time.

In an emergency, call 112; do not rely solely on phone coverage.

Day 6 – The western coast: coves and beaches

09:00–20:00 Relaxed, with short drives

Alternate swimming and walks along the coast west of Kavala, choosing the beach based on wind, crowd levels, and available facilities.

09:00

From Kavala to Nea Iraklitsa

Reach Nea Iraklitsa in about 15–25 minutes by car and start with a stroll along the seafront and a swim. The beach is freely accessible; sunbeds and umbrellas, where available, can typically cost €10–€25 per set.

Bring cash for small purchases and parking.

11:30

Stop in Nea Peramos

Head to Nea Peramos, about 10–15 minutes away, to explore the beach and the harbor. Spend an hour swimming or having a coffee, with an estimated cost of €3–€8 for a simple break.

In high summer, parking near the sea fills up early.

13:00

Fish lunch

Have lunch in a taverna in Nea Peramos or along the waterfront, choosing your fish based on the displayed price or the price quoted before ordering. The bill can vary a lot, but expect around €18–€35 per person.

Ask for the price per kilo for fresh fish.

15:00

Ammolofoi Beach

Head to Ammolofoi for an afternoon by the sea on a sandy stretch known for its clear waters and summer facilities. Access to the beach is usually free, while beach bars, sunbeds, and drinks may cost extra.

Check the wind conditions and parking availability; the equipped areas can get crowded.

18:30

Return and dinner in Kavala

Head back to Kavala in about 25–35 minutes, with a scenic stop if the light is good. For dinner, budget €15–€30 per person, choosing a place in town or along the harbor.

If you have had alcohol, designate a driver or take a taxi.

Day 7 – Pagheo villages, scenery and wine

08:30–19:30 Rural, with visits by appointment

Round off the trip among villages, foothill landscapes, and local wines, checking access and tour availability in advance.

08:30

Departure for Mesoropi

Drive to Mesoropi, at the foot of Mount Pagheo, and allow time for a walk through the village and its surroundings. The trip from Kavala takes roughly 45–60 minutes; rural roads can be slow.

Wear shoes with suitable soles if you plan to walk on trails.

10:00

Palia Kavala Waterfalls

Reach the waterfall area and follow only accessible, marked trails, checking the ground conditions and water flow. The outdoor visit is usually free and takes about 60–90 minutes; after rain, the ground can become slippery.

Do not go close to unstable drops or banks.

12:00

Lunch stop in the Pagheo area

Stop at a taverna in the area to sample local dishes, with an estimated budget of €12–€22 per person. Let them know in advance if you want to eat in a specific village, because not all places serve continuously.

Confirm the restaurant’s opening status and hours, especially outside the season.

14:00

Kokkinochori and vineyards

Continue to Kokkinochori, an area tied to Pagheo’s wine production, and take in the landscape of vineyards and hills. The walk through the village is free; respect private property and agricultural signs.

By car, allow realistic travel times on secondary roads.

15:30

Visit and tasting at Biblia Chora

End with a visit to the Biblia Chora winery, which must be booked directly: availability, duration, and tour languages may vary. The tasting has an estimated cost of €15–€35 per person, depending on the number of wines and the option chosen.

Decide in advance who will drive: the tasting is not compatible with driving after drinking.

18:00

Return to Kavala

Head back to Kavala at a relaxed pace, allowing about 40–55 minutes of driving and stopping only in safe areas. For your final dinner, budget €18–€35 per person, or buy local products to take away.

Leave room for traffic and any unexpected delays on the road.

Practical tips

  • For Philippi, the monastery, beaches, and winery, check opening hours and availability a few days in advance: openings and services are often seasonal.
  • A car offers greater freedom inland; in Kavala, where alleys and parking are limited, leave it parked and get around on foot.
  • For the hike on Mount Pagheo, bring water, sunscreen, hiking shoes and layered clothing; choose a guide if you don’t know the trails and give it a miss if the weather looks uncertain.
  • In summer, plan archaeological visits for the morning, keep cash for small shops and beaches, and check local rules for religious sites.
