Explore the southern side of Mount Paggaio, alternating local culture, a short hike, and places of spirituality.
09:00
Kipia Wax Museum
Start in Kipia with a visit to Theodoros Kokkinidis’s museum, which features wax figures inspired by historical personalities and popular culture. Allow about 45–60 minutes; admission may cost around 5–8 €, but it’s wise to call ahead to confirm opening times and visiting arrangements.
The visit may require advance booking or a prior check of opening hours.
10:15
Transfer to Mesoropi
Reach Mesoropi by car, allowing roughly 25–35 minutes depending on your starting point and road conditions. The route crosses the interior of Kavala: drive calmly and allow a few minutes to park on the edge of the village.
The day is easier with a car; public transport links to the villages can be infrequent.
10:50
Stroll through the village of Mesoropi
Spend about an hour wandering the village lanes, admiring the traditional stone houses, courtyards, and views of the wooded slopes of Mount Paggaio. The center is easy to explore on foot and does not require a ticket; wear comfortable shoes, as some streets are uneven or uphill.
Respect the village’s quiet atmosphere, and keep in mind that shops and cafés may have seasonal hours.
12:00
Walk to the Mesoropi waterfalls
From the village, follow the local trail to the waterfalls, allowing about 1–1,5 hours for the walk out, stops, and return, depending on your pace and trail conditions. The path crosses a shady, damp setting: take in the small cascades and the riparian vegetation, without approaching the slippery sections. Access is usually free.
After rain the trail can be muddy; bring water and shoes with good grip.
13:30
Lunch in Mesoropi
Stop at a village taverna, if open, or arrange a packed lunch bought before leaving the larger towns. For a simple meal at a taverna, expect roughly 12–22 € per person, drinks excluded or included depending on the place.
In the low season, it is useful to check in advance which businesses are open.
15:00
Stop in Nikisiani
Continue by car to Nikisiani, with an approximate transfer of 25–35 minutes. Take a relaxed stroll through the center and enjoy a break in a café: the stop offers a change of pace before the ascent to the monastery and gives you a chance to appreciate everyday village life.
Park without blocking the narrow streets in the center.
16:00
Monastery of the Virgin Eikosifoinissa
Reach the monastery by car from Nikisiani, allowing about 20–30 minutes on a mountain road. Set aside 45–60 minutes to visit the accessible areas and to admire the architecture and forest setting; admission is generally free, while a small donation is optional. Modest clothing and respectful behavior are required.
Confirm the opening hours before heading up: access may depend on the day, the season, and religious services.
17:30
Return and scenic stop
Head back at a leisurely pace toward your overnight stay or starting point, leaving at least 60–90 minutes for the drive and any short scenic stops. Late-afternoon light enhances the Paggaio landscape; pull over only in safe areas and not along curves or sections with poor visibility.
Fuel costs depend on your starting point and vehicle; allow for an extra margin on mountain roads.
