(Cave of Zeus)
According to tradition, Zeus was born and raised in this cave on Mount Dikti. The path leads past stalactites and stalagmites to an evocative underground lake.
Surrounded by the Dikti mountains, the Lasithi Plateau is a rural landscape of fields, small villages, and windmills, far from the pace of the coastal resorts. Here, mythology meets everyday Cretan life: you can explore the cave linked to the birth of Zeus, ancient monasteries, and stunning views.

Set amid greenery near the village of Agios Konstantinos, this monastery is one of the most important religious sites on the plateau. The complex and its surroundings offer a peaceful break during your exploration of the area.
These historic windmills, lined along the Ambelos Pass, are among the most recognizable sights in Lasithi. The area is also an excellent viewpoint over the plateau and the surrounding mountains.
In the village of Agios Georgios, the museum tells the story and everyday life of the local community through objects and traces from the past. It is an interesting stop for getting to know the plateau's traditions better.
This themed park offers an introduction to traditional Cretan farming activities and crafts. The visit is ideal for those who want to discover local customs and products in a setting surrounded by mountain scenery.

Just outside the plateau, this historic monastery is known for its Byzantine frescoes and for the icon of the Virgin Mary to which it is dedicated. Its location at the foot of the mountains makes it a pleasant stop on the way to Lasithi.

To explore the plateau and its villages, a car is the most convenient option: the distances are not great, but the roads are winding and public transport can be infrequent. Drive carefully, especially on mountain stretches and after dark, and allow extra time beyond what the navigator suggests. In built-up areas, parking is often along the road or in small public spaces. To reach Dikteon Cave near Psychro, check access and trail conditions in advance.
Spring and early autumn are ideal for strolling and visiting the villages, with generally pleasant temperatures and lovely scenery. In summer, the climate on the plateau can be cooler than on the coast, but the sun is still strong and the middle of the day can be hot. In winter, conditions can change quickly: cold, rain, or snow can make getting around less easy.
In the plateau villages, you’ll find family-run tavernas where you can sample Cretan dishes made with local ingredients. Local specialties include potatoes, cheeses, honey, and meats cooked according to tradition. Opening hours and days may vary, especially out of season, so it’s best to ask locally. For a break, look for a taverna in the village square and ask what the dishes of the day are.
