OrestiadaEvros, East Macedonia and Thrace · Greece
One destination.
A thousand ways to live it.
Near the borders with Turkey and Bulgaria, Orestiada is a young city, founded by Greek refugees after 1922, and it retains an identity deeply tied to the history of Thrace. Its location also makes it an excellent starting point for exploring the region’s rivers, villages, and Byzantine castles.
Worth seeing, worth remembering.
It is one of the city’s main religious buildings and a landmark for the local community. It is worth a visit to appreciate its architecture and peaceful atmosphere.
The heart of city life, it is a pleasant stop to observe the daily rhythm of Orestiada and pause in one of the square’s cafés. From here, several places in the center are easily reached on foot.
Arda River in Kastanies
North of the city, the Arda River flows through a green and peaceful landscape, ideal for a break in the open air. The Kastanies area is also known for its summer events and its proximity to the border.
This 14th-century Byzantine fortress, linked to Emperor John VI Kantakouzenos, dominates the small settlement of Pythio. Its imposing towers make it one of the most evocative medieval monuments in Evros.
The fortress walls and towers reveal the strategic role of Didymoteicho through Byzantine and Ottoman times. Its elevated position offers views over the city rooftops and the surrounding plain.

How to get around
The center of Orestiada is fairly compact and easy to get around on foot. To reach nearby towns and villages, intercity KTEL buses and taxis are the most practical options; check timetables and service frequency in advance. A rental car gives you more freedom to explore the Evros region. Check the transport links before you set off, as services and schedules may vary.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are generally the most pleasant times to visit Orestiada and get around the surrounding area. Summer can be very hot, while in winter temperatures can drop significantly: bring clothing suited to the season and check the forecast. In spring, the mild days are ideal for strolling and discovering the Evros countryside.
Where to eat
In the center you’ll find tavernas and casual spots where you can try Greek cuisine and Thracian specialties, such as grilled meats, home-style dishes, and mezedes to share. Also look for local products and traditional sweets, often found in pastry shops. To choose, ask for the dish of the day and check opening hours, which may vary outside the busiest periods.
Quick tips
- 01Bring a valid ID with you, especially if you plan to travel toward areas near the border.
- 02Check the intercity bus schedules in advance and don’t assume there will be frequent services on weekends.
- 03In summer, bring water, a hat, and sunscreen; in winter, choose warm clothing suitable for rain.
- 04Learn a few words of Greek: a simple «kaliméra» (good morning) is often appreciated.
