Archaeological Site of Olympia

This vast archaeological complex preserves the remains of the sanctuary of Zeus and the buildings linked to the ancient Games. Walking among the ruins offers a glimpse into Olympia’s religious and sporting significance.

Temple of Zeus

Once the most imposing temple in the sanctuary, it housed the famous statue of Zeus, counted among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Today, only the foundations and great fallen columns remain.

Temple of Hera

One of the oldest monumental temples in Greece, it was dedicated to Hera and stood at the heart of the sanctuary. Its grounds are still tied to Olympic tradition: this is where the flame-lighting ceremony takes place.

Ancient Stadium of Olympia

After passing through the monumental entrance, you reach the stadium where athletes competed during the ancient Games. The dirt track and natural embankments recreate the atmosphere of the contests.

This elegant circular building was commissioned by Philip II of Macedon and completed by Alexander the Great. Its columns and the remains of its decoration bear witness to the meeting of Greek architecture and Macedonian power.

Archaeological Museum of Olympia

The museum houses finds from the sanctuary, including sculptures, votive offerings, and architectural decoration. Its most famous masterpiece is the Hermes of Praxiteles, one of the best-known works of ancient Greek sculpture.

BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

How to get around

Olympia’s center is compact and easy to explore on foot: the archaeological site, the museum, and most of the hotels and tavernas are close by. To get to the town, you can arrive by car or by bus, often via Pyrgos; check the schedules in advance, as services can be limited. A car is useful for exploring the surroundings and the region of Elis. Taxis can be handy for local trips, but it’s best to agree on the fare before setting off.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the most pleasant times to visit Olympia, thanks to generally mild temperatures and fewer crowds than in summer. In July and August, the heat can be strong, especially at the archaeological site, where there is little shade. If you’re traveling in high season, visit the site in the morning and check opening hours in advance.

Where to eat

In the center of Olympia you’ll find tavernas and casual places, convenient after visiting the site and the museum. Look for Greek dishes and regional specialties made with local products such as olive oil, vegetables, cheeses, and grilled meats. For a more relaxed meal, avoid peak hours and ask what the daily specials are.

Quick tips

  1. Set aside at least half a day for the archaeological site and the museum: wear comfortable shoes, as the route is extensive and partly uneven.
  2. Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen, especially in summer; shaded spots inside the archaeological area are limited.
  3. Before visiting, check opening times, admission fees, and ticket purchase methods, as they may vary depending on the season.
  4. If you arrive by bus, check the return times and leave plenty of time: services to nearby towns are not always frequent.
