BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

How to get around

The historic center is compact and easy to explore on foot, but the cobblestone streets call for comfortable shoes. To reach farther neighborhoods or nearby sites, you can use city buses, taxis, or colectivos, sharing the ride with other passengers. Taxis do not always use the meter: agree on the fare before setting off. For excursions outside the city, check timetables and departure points carefully.

When to go

From November to April the climate is generally drier; from May to October, rain is more frequent, often in the afternoon. July comes alive with the Guelaguetza celebrations, while from late October to early November, Día de Muertos draws many visitors. During these periods, it’s wise to book accommodation and transport well in advance.

Where to eat

To sample the local cuisine, explore the Benito Juárez and 20 de Noviembre markets, as well as the small fondas in the center. Look for specialties such as mole, tlayudas, tamales, and Oaxacan hot chocolate; for bolder flavors, try chapulines too. At busy stalls, ingredients tend to be fresher because of the faster turnover: choose carefully and ask the price before ordering.

Quick tips

  1. Bring comfortable shoes and a light jacket for the evening: the center has uneven paving, and the altitude can make the days feel cooler.
  2. Drink bottled or treated water and use sunscreen, especially during the middle of the day.
  3. At markets, ask the price before buying and keep some small bills with you.
  4. On holiday days, book ahead and consider possible closures or changes to opening hours.
