Day 1 – The coast of Pagasetic Gulf: Kala Nera and Afissos

10:00–19:30 Relaxed pace, with swimming stops

Get acquainted with the western coast and the villages overlooking the gulf.

10:00

Walk in Kala Nera

From the waterfront, you can walk to Kala Nera beach, with generally calm waters and a row of seaside tavernas. Allow about an hour for the walk and first stop; beach access is free, while sunbeds and an umbrella can cost around €8–15 per couple.

In summer, it's best to arrive early to find parking near the waterfront.

11:45

Swimming at Koropi Beach

Reach Koropi in about 5–10 minutes by car and stop for a swim on the pebble and sand beach. Plan for 60–90 minutes, bring water and reef shoes; entry is free, with any purchases paid for at the seasonal venues.

Bring water with you: natural shade can be limited.

13:30

Lunch by the sea

Head back toward Kala Nera or have lunch in Afissos, choosing fish, salads, and Greek dishes. Expect to pay around €15–30 per person for a simple or mid-range meal, excluding any more expensive fresh fish dishes.

Ask the price of the fish by weight before ordering.

15:30

Afissos and the harbor

Stroll through the small center of Afissos and along the little harbor, among traditional houses, cafés, and views over the gulf. The visit is free and takes about an hour; for a coffee break or a drink, budget €3–7.

The center is pleasant in the late afternoon, when the sun is less intense.

17:00

Abovos Beach and return

End with a swim at Abovos Beach, a short distance from the center of Afissos. Leave at least an hour for the sea and head back to base before sunset; free access, with variable costs for any beach services.

If the sea is rough, stay close to the shore and follow local advice.

Day 2 – Milies: the historic train and the heart of the village

09:30–18:00 Moderate walks on cobbled streets

Discover Milies’ railway and architectural heritage without rushing.

09:30

Arrival in Milies

Reach Milies by car from Kala Nera in about 25–35 minutes, along a scenic road with curves. Park on the edge of the center and spend an hour exploring the alleys, stone houses, and viewpoints; visiting the village is free.

Wear shoes with good grip: some streets are steep and cobbled.

10:45

Milies Railway Station

Head down to the historic station of the Pelion train, the terminus of the narrow-gauge line. Admire the platform, the locomotive when present, and the wooded landscape; the exterior visit is free, while the train ticket, if in service, varies depending on the route and season.

Check the timetable and availability in advance: services do not run daily all year round.

12:00

Church of the Taxiarches

Return to the center to visit the Church of the Taxiarches, known for its decorated interior and intimate atmosphere. Allow 20–30 minutes and check on site whether it is open; admission is generally free, with an optional donation.

Respect the silence and any dress code instructions.

13:00

Lunch and historic library

Have lunch in a village taverna, then stop by the public library of Milies, tied to the local cultural tradition. Lunch can cost around 15–28 € per person; library visiting hours may be limited or vary.

Ask in advance whether the library is accessible to visitors that day.

15:30

Scenic trail and return

Spend the afternoon on a short walk between the center and the viewpoints nearby, without venturing far if you do not know the paths. Allow 60–90 minutes, with no cost except water or a coffee stop; return to base in the late afternoon.

In rain or on wet ground, avoid the steep dirt sections.

Day 3 – Mountain villages and Argalasti square

09:00–18:30 Scenic day by car with short walks

Explore the traditional villages of the inland area and the center of Argalasti.

09:00

Vizitsa

From Milies, reach Vizitsa in about 15–20 minutes, taking care on the bends and narrow passes. Stroll among the stone mansions, slate roofs, and village lanes for about an hour; exploration is free.

Park in the designated spaces at the entrance and continue on foot.

10:45

Viewpoint and café in Vizitsa

Stop near the square to admire the traditional architecture and the view over the green slopes of Pelion. A coffee break costs about 3–7 €; allow another 30–45 minutes before setting off again.

The village streets are steep: avoid arriving with bulky luggage.

12:00

Pinakates

Continue on to Pinakates, about 25–35 minutes’ drive, for a stroll among historic houses, fountains, and the tree-shaded square. A self-guided visit takes about an hour; budget 2–5 € for a drink or coffee if the place is open.

The distances may seem short on the map, but the mountain road slows the journey.

14:00

Lunch in Argalasti

Head down to Argalasti and stop for lunch in a village taverna, the gateway to the southern part of Pelion. A simple meal costs about 15–28 € per person; allow around an hour and a half.

Argalasti is a good stop to stock up on cash and essentials.

16:00

Argalasti square

Stroll through the central square and admire the clock tower and the buildings that define its skyline. The stop is free and takes 30–45 minutes; you can add a drink for about 3–7 € before heading back.

The square is livelier in the evening and on market days.

Day 4 – Lafkos, Horto and the Milina coastline

09:30–19:00 A mix of short visits and relaxation by the sea

Get to know the villages on the southern western side and stop by the gulf.

09:30

Lafkos

From Argalasti, you can reach Lafkos in about 15–20 minutes. Spend an hour in the village, enjoying the stone houses, alleys and shaded square; the walk is free.

In the morning, the village is quiet and pleasant to explore on foot.

10:45

Radio Museum of Lafkos

If it is open, visit the museum dedicated to the history of radio and local collections. Allow about 30–45 minutes; any admission fee is indicative and may vary, so check the opening hours on site or with the municipality.

The opening hours of small museums may be seasonal: do not plan your day around an unconfirmed visit.

12:00

Descent to Horto

Head down to Horto in about 15–20 minutes and take a walk on the beach and along the seafront. Access is free; for a relaxing swim, set aside at least an hour and bring water and sunscreen with you.

The road is winding: drive carefully and use the lay-bys to pull over.

13:30

Lunch in Horto

Choose a taverna near the sea and try fish dishes or Greek specialties. Allow 18–32 € per person for a meal, with higher prices for fresh fish; after lunch you can enjoy a short break in the shade.

In high season, it’s wise to book ahead or arrive before 13:00.

16:00

Milina and a stroll along the harbor

Continue to Milina in about 10–15 minutes and walk along the bay and small harbor. The visit is free and takes about an hour; ice cream, coffee, or a soft drink may cost around 3–8 €.

Milina is a good place to buy water and small supplies before the following days.

Day 5 – The southern tip: Tzasteni and Trikeri

08:30–19:00 A long day, with driving on winding roads and possible boat transfers

Reach the southernmost part of the Pelion and visit the villages of Trikeri and Agia Kyriaki.

08:30

Departure and scenic stop at Tzasteni

Set off early from Milina or Argalasti: the drive to Tzasteni takes about 30–45 minutes, depending on road conditions. Stop to admire the bay and the houses by the sea; the stop is free and should only be made in safe places.

Do not stop in the roadway: some stretches are narrow and have no shoulder.

10:00

Trikeri

Continue to the village of Trikeri, perched at the tip of the peninsula. Explore the narrow lanes and traditional houses on foot for about an hour and a half; access to the village is free, while coffee and snacks cost about 3–10 €.

Check fuel and range before setting off: services are scarcer than in the main towns.

12:00

Lunch in Agia Kyriaki

Head down to Agia Kyriaki, a small fishing harbor, for lunch and a stroll along the pier. A meal may cost around 18–35 € per person, depending on your choice and the catch; allow at least an hour and a half.

Ask about the availability and prices of the daily specials before ordering.

14:00

Monastery of Evangelistria

Find out in advance whether it’s possible to reach the monastery on the island of Trikeri and whether any boat connections are available. If the transfer is available, allow for a total of at least 2–3 hours and a variable cost, roughly 10–25 €; visit with respectful attire.

Do not assume ferries or private rides are guaranteed: availability and schedules depend on the season and the sea conditions.

17:00

Return with a stop at the port

Head back toward base at a relaxed pace, allowing at least 45–60 minutes of driving and a short break at a safe spot. Avoid tackling the final stretch after dark if you do not know the road; the scenic stop is free.

Check your fuel level and do not rely on gas stations being open until evening.

Day 6

Southeast beaches: Platanias and Mikro

09:00–18:30 Beach day, with short transfers but narrow roads

Set aside a day by the sea among bays and small coastal settlements.

09:00

Platanias

Reach Platanias by car, allowing for longer-than-expected travel times because of the bends and elevation changes. Stroll through the harbor and along the shore before the heat builds up; free access and about 45 minutes for the visit.

Park without blocking access to the harbor or nearby homes.

10:15

Kastri Beach

Head to Kastri for your first beach stop, bringing water and a small supply of food. Spend about 90 minutes by the sea; free entry, with services that may be limited or seasonal.

Sea conditions on the eastern side may differ from those in Pagasetic Gulf.

12:15

Mikro Beach

Continue on to Mikro Beach, a sheltered bay ideal for a longer break. Access is free; if beach services are available, sunbeds and an umbrella may cost around €8–18 per couple.

Bring reef shoes and do not leave valuables in the car.

14:00

Lunch and a shaded break

Have lunch in Platanias or at an open place along the coast, checking which options are available that day. Budget around €15–30 per person; in more remote areas, it’s best not to wait until the last minute to eat.

Outside the high season, some businesses may be closed on weekdays.

16:00

Liri Beach and return

Wrap up with a stop at Liri Beach, if the road and sea conditions allow. Allow at least an hour for swimming and the return trip; the beach is free, but access can be tricky and services are not guaranteed.

If the road surface is rough or the sea is rough, choose a more accessible beach.

Day 7 – The eastern coast: Potistika, Melani and Paltsi

09:00–19:00 A seaside day with flexible stops

End the trip at some of the most scenic beaches in southern Pelion.

09:00

Potistika Beach

Set off early and head to Potistika, checking the route and driving time from your base. The beach is wide and picturesque, with free access; set aside about two hours for swimming and walking along the shore.

Waves can be strong: always assess conditions before entering the water.

11:30

Melani Beach

Head to Melani and spend an hour and a half at the beach and its open views. Access is free, but shade and facilities may be limited; bring water, a hat, and sunscreen.

Do not leave litter and follow any guidance for protecting the dunes.

13:30

Lunch and break

Have lunch at an open taverna nearby or enjoy a picnic you brought with you, checking in advance where facilities are available. For a restaurant meal, budget around €15–30 per person; allow 60–90 minutes.

At secluded beaches, offerings may be seasonal: bring enough water with you.

15:30

Paltsi Beach

Continue to Paltsi for one last stop on the coast, choosing the spot based on the wind and sea conditions. Beach access is free; allow at least an hour and keep in mind that the return on local roads can be slow.

If you are driving at sunset, reduce your speed and watch out for animals and poorly lit stretches.

17:15

Mourtias Beach and farewells to Pelion

If time and conditions allow, stop at Mourtias for a short scenic walk before heading back. The visit is free and can take 30–60 minutes; otherwise, head straight back to avoid making the day too long.

Keep this stop optional: the distances along the eastern coast take more time than the map suggests.

Estimated budget

Overnights for 6 nights, double room€360–1.080 per room
Car rental for 7 days€280–630 per car
Fuel and parking€100–190 per car
Meals and drinks€210–420 per person
Activities, possible train and boat€15–70 per person
Approximate total budget, excluding flights€650–1,600 per person in a double room

Greece uses the euro (€), so no currency exchange is needed for those arriving from Italy. The costs are rough estimates for a 7-day trip and vary significantly depending on the season, how far in advance you book, the accommodation category and the availability of services; they do not include flights or personal expenses.

Practical tips

  • Rent a compact car: many roads in the Pelion are narrow, winding, and have limited parking; allow for longer travel times than those shown by the navigation system.
  • For the heritage train, museums, boat connections, and seasonal tavernas, check opening times and availability shortly before your visit: they can change depending on the time of year and sea conditions.
  • Bring rock shoes, water, sunscreen, and a small amount of cash: some beaches are only minimally equipped, and service availability can vary.
  • If you visit churches and monasteries, respect local rules and check opening hours; for swimming on the exposed beaches of the eastern side, always assess wind and waves.
