Guide to Notio Pelio
NOTIO PELIO · ITINERARY

South Pelion (Magnesia, Thessaly, Greece) in 3 days – Complete itinerary

3 days / 2 nights · Villages, sea, mountains, traditions

The itinerary links some of the most distinctive places in southern Pelion, from the western coast of the Pagasetic Gulf to the villages at the far south. The first day is devoted to Afissos, Kala Nera and the mountain hamlets of Milies and Vyzitsa; the second follows the coast between Horto, Milina and Lafkos. The last explores the remote area of Trikeri and Agia Kyriaki, with a possible boat trip to Paleo Trikeri. A rental car offers the greatest flexibility: narrow, winding roads make transfers slower than the distance suggests.

Day 1 – Afissos, Kala Nera and Pelion villages

09:00–20:30 Moderate, between coast and mountains

Discover the western side of Pelion by alternating a seaside stroll with the traditional inland villages.

09:00

Breakfast and a walk in Afissos

Start from the village seafront and walk along the harbor, among cafés and fishing boats. Set aside about an hour for the visit and the view over the gulf; a simple breakfast can cost around 5–9 €.

Park outside the central core, where the streets are narrow.

10:45

Beach stop in Kala Nera

Reach Kala Nera by car in about 20–30 minutes, allowing for local traffic. Take a walk along the tree-lined shore or enjoy a swim: beach access is generally free, while sun loungers and an umbrella can cost around 10–20 € per couple.

12:30

Lunch on the seafront

Stop at a taverna in Kala Nera for fish, mezedes, or local dishes, budgeting around 15–28 € per person. Allow at least an hour and a half, so you don’t have to head straight up the road to the villages.

14:30

Arrival in Milies and a walk through the village

Drive up to Milies, usually in 20–30 minutes, and leave your car in the parking areas at the edge of the center. Explore the cobbled lanes, stone houses, and shaded square; allow about 90 minutes and no entrance fee for the walk.

16:15

Milies Railway Station

Head to the historic station, a short distance from the village, to see the terminus of the Pelion train and the valley scenery. The service is seasonal and timetable-dependent: if it’s running, check in advance for times and tickets, roughly from about 10–20 € for one way.

18:00

Vyzitsa and dinner

Continue by car for about 10–15 minutes to Vyzitsa and stroll among traditional mansions, courtyards, and cobbled alleys. After an hour’s visit, have dinner in the village or head back toward the coast; expect 18–30 € per person for a full meal.

Day 2 – Southern coast between Horto, Milina, and Lafkos

09:00–20:00 Relaxed, with short drives

Explore the villages of the southwest coast and reach Lafkos for a taste of rural Pelion.

09:00

Departure for Horto

Drive to Horto and start the day with a walk along the waterfront, among small coves and moored boats. Spend about an hour on the visit; breakfast in a café costs roughly 5–9 €.

10:30

Morning by the sea in Horto

Choose a beach or accessible cove nearby and set aside a couple of hours to swim and unwind. Beaches are generally free; check on site for any paid facilities and bring water, especially in the hotter months.

13:00

Lunch in Horto

Stop at a village taverna to sample fish, vegetables, and Greek specialties. A simple lunch can cost around 15–28 € per person, depending on the catch and the season.

14:30

Walk in Milina

Drive to Milina, usually in 10–15 minutes, and stroll along the seafront to the small harbor. The village is ideal for a peaceful stop of about an hour; ice cream or coffee cost roughly 3–7 €.

16:00

Climb to Lafkos

Reach Lafkos from the coast in about 15–25 minutes, along a winding road that calls for careful driving. Wander among the stone houses and village squares, taking in the traditional architecture; access to the village is free.

18:00

Aperitif and dinner in the village

End the visit with a stop in the square and dinner in Lafkos, or head back to Milina for sunset over the gulf. Budget around 18–30 € per person for dinner; the return drive may take 15–25 minutes.

Day 3

The southern tip: Trikeri and the island of Paleo Trikeri

08:30–20:00 A long day, with transfers and a possible crossing

Reach the southernmost villages of Pelion and get to know the island scenery of the Pagasetic Gulf.

08:30

Departure toward Alogoporos

Set off early and drive to the Alogoporos boarding area, allowing about 40–60 minutes from Milina and more if traffic is heavy. Have breakfast before leaving or bring water and a snack; the transfer is easier with a compact car.

09:45

Crossing to Paleo Trikeri

If boats are available, cross the short stretch of sea to Paleo Trikeri and agree on the return time immediately. Connections and fares vary depending on the season and sea conditions: expect roughly 5–15 € per person and check availability on site before planning the day around the crossing.

If no boats are available, continue directly to Trikeri and Agia Kyriaki.

10:15

Monastery of Evangelistria, Paleo Trikeri

Reach the monastery on foot from the landing stage, following the paths and local signs, and visit the accessible areas in respectful clothing. Allow about one hour for the walk and stop; entry may be free, but opening times and access can change.

12:00

Return to the mainland and transfer to Trikeri

Go back to Alogoporos at the agreed time and continue by car to Trikeri, allowing about 20–30 minutes. If the boat is not running, use this time to head directly to the village and fit in the island visit only if possible.

13:00

Lunch and visit to Trikeri

Have lunch in a local taverna, with an estimated budget of 15–28 € per person, then explore the historic center and its narrow lanes on foot. Distances in the village are short, but the terrain can be steep and uneven: allow about two hours in total.

16:00

Port of Agia Kyriaki and return

Drive down to Agia Kyriaki, usually in 10–20 minutes, and take a stroll around the port among fishing boats and seafront tavernas. A stop of about one hour is enough; for a coffee and a sweet, expect 4–8 €, then set off again with plenty of time for the return journey.

Practical tips

  • Rent a car if you want to visit all the villages: the roads of Pelion are scenic but narrow, winding, and slow.
  • Check in advance the schedule and operation of the Pelion train and the boats to Paleo Trikeri, especially outside the high season.
  • Bring shoes with good grip for the cobbled alleys and trails, as well as water and sunscreen for beach stops.
  • In summer, book accommodation and restaurants in advance; in the smaller villages, some places may have seasonal opening hours.
