The historic center of Nicosia is easy to explore on foot, although in summer it is useful to plan stops in the shade. For longer distances, you can use the city buses, checking updated timetables and routes. The city has no airport: the nearest ones are in Larnaca and Paphos, connected to Nicosia by bus and taxi. The Green Line crosses the city, and you can move from one side to the other at authorized checkpoints, carrying a valid ID with you. If you rent a car, remember that in Cyprus you drive on the left.
Spring and autumn are generally the most pleasant times, with temperatures ideal for strolling around and visiting monuments. Summer can be very hot, especially in the middle of the day: it is better to plan visits for the morning or late afternoon and drink plenty of water. Winter is mild compared with many European destinations, but it can bring rainy days.
To sample Cypriot cuisine, look for tavernas and restaurants in the historic center and traditional neighborhoods. Specialties include meze, halloumi, souvlaki, and grilled meat dishes; also ask which ingredients are in season. Laiki Geitonia is a convenient area for a break during your visit, but compare menus and prices before sitting down.
