A museum dedicated to the history of Grammos and the events of the Greek Civil War, helping visitors understand the complex past of this mountainous region. It is a meaningful visit for placing the area in context beyond its landscapes.

Aliakmonas River in Nestorio

The river runs alongside the town with green banks and peaceful views, ideal for a stroll and a break in the open air. In summer, the area becomes especially lively during the famous River Party.

On the banks of the Aliakmonas, one of Greece's best-known summer music festivals takes place, with concerts and camping immersed in nature. Even outside the event days, the spot is a pleasant starting point for enjoying the river.

Mount Grammos

One of the great mountain ranges in northern Greece, prized for its trails, views, and natural richness. Hikes require good preparation: before setting out, it is advisable to check the trail conditions.

Dragon Cave (Spilia tou Drakou)

Near Kastoria, this cave overlooking Lake Orestiada can be visited along a well-equipped route among chambers, stalactites, and small underground lakes. It makes for an atmospheric excursion to combine with a visit to the city.

Monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa

Overlooking Lake Kastoria, the monastery is known for its medieval frescoes and the tranquility of its garden by the water. It is located in the surroundings of Kastoria, at a distance suitable for a day trip from Nestorio.

Getting around

Nestorio is located about 25 km from Kastoria, and a car is the most convenient way to get there and explore the surrounding area. The roads cross mountainous terrain: drive carefully, especially in the evening or in bad weather. Bus connections can be limited, so check timetables and frequencies before setting off. Getting around the village is easy on foot, while to explore the river area and nearby villages it helps to have a car.

When to go

Spring and early autumn are ideal for strolling and enjoying the scenery, with generally milder temperatures. Summer is lively and coincides with the River Party, the music festival held near the river: dates and lineup change from year to year, so it’s best to check in advance and book early. In winter, the climate can be harsh and road conditions can vary.

Where to eat

The tavernas in Nestorio and the surrounding area serve home-style Greek cooking, grilled meats, and seasonal dishes. Local legumes are also popular in the Kastoria region: ask which specialties are available that day. Dining options in the village can be limited, especially out of season, so for more choices you can stop in Kastoria. During the River Party, it’s a good idea to plan meals in advance.
