Archaeological site of Nemea

The complex preserves the remains of the sanctuary of Zeus and offers a glimpse into the history of the Nemean Games, celebrated in ancient times. The archaeological route brings together monuments and evidence of great interest.

Temple of Zeus at Nemea

The imposing surviving columns are the symbol of the sanctuary and stand out in the open landscape of the valley. The temple, built in the 4th century BC, is one of the site’s most striking monuments.

Nemea Stadium

Reachable from the sanctuary through an ancient passage, the stadium preserves the race track and part of the spectator structures. It is the ideal place to imagine the athletic competitions that took place here.

BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

How to get around

Nemea is easiest to visit by car, which is useful for reaching the archaeological site, the museum, and the wineries scattered across the countryside. From the center, you can explore the more compact area on foot, but for trips outside town it’s best not to rely on frequent public transport. Check public transport timetables and availability in advance, especially on weekends and public holidays. If you take part in a tasting, arrange a ride or choose a driver who won’t drink.

When to go

Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures for visiting the archaeological site and the wineries. Summer is hot, so it’s best to schedule outdoor visits in the morning and bring water, a hat, and sunscreen. September is an interesting time for the grape harvest atmosphere, but activities and opening hours can vary: contact the wineries before you travel.

Where to eat

In the center of Nemea, look for tavernas and traditional spots where you can try dishes from Peloponnesian cuisine paired with local wines, especially those made from Agiorgitiko. Outside the center, some wineries offer tastings and, occasionally, small food pairings: check whether booking is required. Opening hours can change depending on the season, so it’s a good idea to call ahead.

Quick tips

  1. Check the updated opening hours of the archaeological site and museum before your visit.
  2. Book tastings in advance and ask whether tours are available in Italian or in English.
  3. Bring comfortable shoes and water: there are sun-exposed stretches between the archaeological site and the wineries.
  4. If you want to visit more than one winery, plan your transfers in advance and don’t drive after drinking.
