Guide to Nea Zichni
NEA ZICHNI · ITINERARY

Nea Zichni (Serres, Central Macedonia, Greece) in 7 days – Complete Itinerary

7 days / 6 nights · Archaeology, nature, history, gastronomy

Nea Zichni is a peaceful base from which to discover a part of Central Macedonia where villages, ancient remains, and river landscapes coexist. The itinerary is organized by area: first Nea Zichni and Alistrati, then ancient Amphipolis and the city of Serres, and finally Lailias, Lake Kerkini, and the coast of the Orfano Gulf. A car is strongly recommended, as public transport connections to the cave, archaeological sites, and natural areas are limited. Museum and open-air site opening hours and access conditions should be checked on site, especially outside the high season.

Greece uses the euro (€), so no currency exchange is needed for those departing from Italy. All amounts are indicative estimates, not verified rates: they may vary depending on season, availability, accommodation type, and chosen services. Practical tips

  • Rent a car: many stops are rural, and public transport connections don’t make it easy to visit them all in the same day.
  • Check the official opening hours for the cave, museums, and archaeological sites the day before; in the low season, some services may have reduced hours.
  • In summer, bring water, a hat, and sunscreen for Amphipolis and outdoor walks; in the mountains and by the lake, factor in wind and temperature swings.
  • Follow the instructions at military and nature sites: access to Fort Roupel and the Kasta Tomb may be regulated or restricted.
