3 days / 2 nights · memory, culture, architecture, parks, neighborhoods
Nea Ionia is an unusual base for learning about the history of the Greek community that arrived from Asia Minor and, at the same time, exploring some different sides of Athens’ northern suburbs. The first day stays within the local urban fabric, between museum, churches and shopping streets; the second combines the greenery of Galatsi with the sporting architecture of Marousi. The last day is devoted to Kifisia, reachable on Line 1, among museums, parks and cafés. Opening hours, admission and fees are indicative: in particular, it is worth checking the museums’ opening times in advance and any events at the OAKA.

Discover the memory of the Asia Minor community and get your bearings in the everyday center of Nea Ionia.
10:00
Arrival at Nea Ionia station
Line 1 station is a convenient starting point for reaching the center on foot. From here you can make your way through the neighborhood's shopping streets and squares; the urban transit ticket costs approximately €1,20–1,50 for 90 minutes.
Check the walking route to the museum before setting off: some streets are busy.
10:30
K.E.MI.PO. and the memory of Asia Minor
Spend about 60–90 minutes at the Center for the Study and Promotion of the Culture of Asia Minor, an important place for understanding the history of Nea Ionia and its residents. Access may depend on opening hours, cultural events, or reservations: allow for an indicative admission cost of €0–8, to be confirmed directly.
Check the opening hours with the center before visiting: public access may be limited.
12:00
Church of Agios Georgios
Reach the church with a short walk and take your time to admire the architecture and decorative interior details, if accessible. Entry to places of worship is normally free; remember to dress respectfully and avoid visiting during services.
Access hours may vary depending on ceremonies.
13:00
Lunch in the taverns in the center
Choose a tavern or a Greek eatery on the central streets: it’s a great chance to try mezedes, salads, grilled dishes, or Anatolian-style specialties. As a rough guide, budget €12–22 per person for a simple meal with a drink.
To sample more dishes, ordering a few plates to share is often a good option.
14:30
Stroll through the shopping streets
Explore the center at a relaxed pace, taking in the shops, cafés, and the everyday rhythm of a residential city in the Athens metropolitan area. The walk is free and requires no tickets; set aside about an hour for the liveliest streets and the squares you come across along the way.
The central area is well suited to an independent visit, but do pay attention to traffic when crossing the streets.
16:00
Coffee break at a local café
Stop for a Greek coffee or a cold frappé and watch neighborhood life away from the main tourist routes. A drink and a pastry usually cost around €4–9; prices vary depending on the venue.
In the afternoon, some shops may keep shorter hours or close for a break.
18:00
Return to the station and dinner
End the day by heading back toward the station, so you have convenient access to transport and the city-center venues. For a casual dinner, budget around €15–28 per person; if you prefer a quieter evening, choose a place near your accommodation.
Line 1 connects Nea Ionia to central Athens, also useful for any late-night extensions.
Alternate a walk in Galatsi Park with an exterior visit to the large Olympic complex in Marousi.
09:30
Morning at Alsos Veikou
Reach Galatsi Park by bus or taxi: direct connections depend on your starting point and can take around 20–35 minutes. Set aside 90 minutes for the tree-lined paths and rest areas; entry to the park is free.
For this journey, check the updated route on a local transit app: the fastest connection is not always direct.
11:15
Break and stroll through the Galatsi neighborhood
After the park, take a short stop at a neighborhood café and walk the nearby streets before heading to Marousi. Allow about €4–9 for a drink and a snack; plan on 20–30 minutes to reach the useful stop.
Alternatively, a taxi can cut transfer times, but the cost depends on traffic.
12:15
Transfer to OAKA
Reach the Olympic area by bus, taxi, or a combination of transport; depending on your starting point, the trip can take around 25–40 minutes. A city ticket costs about €1,20–1,50, while the taxi has a variable fare.
Check in advance for any closures or access changes during events.
13:00
Exploring the OAKA complex
Walk through the outer areas of the complex to appreciate its scale, open spaces, and the sports facilities designed for the Olympic Games. Allow about 60–90 minutes: access to public areas is generally free, but indoor areas and facilities may have restrictions.
Do not assume you can enter the facilities: check the conditions for the day.
14:30
Spyros Louis Olympic Stadium
View the main stadium from the outside, recognizable for the canopy designed by Santiago Calatrava, and walk along the accessible public passages. Internal or guided visits, when available, may require booking and cost approximately €0–15.
The availability of visits depends on events and work in progress: consider the exterior visit a reliable alternative.
16:00
Break and late lunch at The Mall Athens
Head to the shopping center, connected to Neratziotissa station, to eat or rest after your walk. A quick meal costs approximately €8–16 per person; the complex also offers indoor shops and services.
The mall is also convenient in case of intense heat or rain.
18:00
Evening stroll in the Marousi area
End with a walk around the complex and a coffee, or return to Nea Ionia on line 1 from Neratziotissa, checking the most practical route. A drink or dessert costs about €4–9; the trip with an urban ticket falls within the indicative fare of €1,20–1,50.
Leave some time for getting around: the OAKA area is large and the walking distances can be surprising.
Visit Kifisia with a straightforward route from the station to the museum and gardens, saving time for the streets of the center.
10:00
From Nea Ionia to Kifisia on line 1
Take line 1 toward Kifisia: the trip from Nea Ionia station takes about 20–25 minutes, with no need to change trains. The urban ticket costs around €1,20–1,50 and the arrival station is close to the center.
Check for any works or service interruptions on the line before departure.
10:30
Kifisia center and station
Once you arrive, get your bearings between the station and the central streets, lined with shops, residential buildings, and cafés. Set aside about 30 minutes for an initial stroll; there is no entrance fee.
The center is pleasant to explore on foot, but some streets have narrow sidewalks.
11:00
Goulandris Natural History Museum
Visit the museum dedicated to natural history and biodiversity, with collections that offer insight into Greek habitats and scientific themes. Allow 1–2 hours and an approximate ticket price of €5–12, to be confirmed with the museum before you go.
Check opening days and hours: they can vary, and some days may not be available.
13:00
Lunch in central Kifisia
Choose a taverna, bistrot, or bakery in the central streets, a short distance from the museum. For a simple lunch, budget around €14–25 per person; in table-service venues, prices may be higher.
Making a reservation is useful on weekends and during peak hours.
14:30
Walk to Kefalari Park
Reach the park on foot in about 15–25 minutes, depending on your starting point, and take a break among the trees and paths. Admission is free; allow 45–60 minutes for an unhurried stroll.
Bring water on hot days: drinking fountains are not always easy to find.
16:00
Shop windows and architecture in the center
Head back toward the center to admire Kifisia’s most elegant streets and wander among shops, residential facades, and small squares. The walk is free; allow about an hour and budget €4–10 for a café stop.
For shopping, check store opening hours: they may vary between weekdays and weekends.
17:30
Return to Nea Ionia
Go back to the station and take Line 1 back to Nea Ionia: the journey takes about 20–25 minutes. If you have time, have dinner in Kifisia before heading back, with an estimated cost of €18–32 per person.
