The Venetian fortress stands on a small islet at the entrance to the harbor and is one of Nafplio’s symbols. Its silhouette on the sea is especially striking at sunset.
The heart of the old town, this square is surrounded by historic buildings, cafés, and taverns. It’s an ideal spot to take a break and explore the surrounding streets on foot.

Getting around
The historic center of Nafplio is easy to explore on foot, among cobbled alleys and squares; some streets are uphill and have uneven paving. To visit , you can climb the staircase on foot, tackling many steps, or reach it by taxi or car. The port and seafront are easily accessible from the center, while boats to depart from the port. KTEL buses connect Nafplio with other towns in the Peloponnese, but schedules can vary. A car is useful for excursions in the surrounding area; in the historic center, however, it is best to park in the outer areas and continue on foot.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are the ideal times: temperatures are generally pleasant for walking and visiting nearby archaeological sites. In summer the days are hot and the city can be crowded, especially on weekends; it is better to plan outdoor visits in the morning or late afternoon. Winter is quieter and relatively mild, but some activities and connections may have reduced hours.
Where to eat
In the historic center and along the harbor you will find tavernas and restaurants serving Greek dishes, fish, and specialties from the Peloponnese. For a more casual meal, look for tavernas on the side streets, often less crowded than the seafront. Menus and the availability of fresh catch change with the season; during busier periods, it is advisable to book in the evening.
