Day 1 – Nafpaktos: port, walls and historic center

10:00–21:00 Moderate walks and castle climb

Discover Nafpaktos’ historic core and end the day on the seafront promenade.

10:00

Walk to the Venetian harbor

Start at the small fortified harbor, among the stone towers and moored boats: it’s a great place to get your bearings and understand the city’s strategic position on the Gulf of Corinth. Allow about 45 minutes for the walk and photos; access to the area is free.

In the morning, the harbor is quieter and offers good light for photos.

11:00

Fethiye Mosque and historic quarter

Walk to the mosque, a witness to the Ottoman period, and admire the architectural details and surrounding urban setting from the outside. Any interior access depends on opening times and local initiatives; plan for a short visit and no cost, unless there are special events.

Check on site whether the mosque is open to the public that day.

11:45

Botsaris Tower

Stop by the historic Botsaris family tower near the harbor to learn more about the city’s history and the Battle of Lepanto. If the small exhibition space is open, allow 30–45 minutes; admission may be free or require a suggested contribution of €2–5.

Opening hours may change depending on the season and local management.

12:45

Lunch in the center

Choose a taverna in the streets around the harbor and order Greek specialties, salad, fish, or grilled dishes. For a simple lunch, budget about €12–20 per person, drinks excluded or included depending on the place.

For fish, ask for the price by weight before ordering.

14:30

Climb to Nafpaktos Castle

Reach the entrance by car or on foot: the climb from the center is steep and takes about 25–40 minutes, while by car it only takes a few minutes, with limited parking near the access point. Allow 1–1.5 hours for the walls, bastions, and views over the gulf; expect an indicative ticket price of €3–6, subject to change.

Wear shoes with good grip: some sections are uneven and sloping.

17:00

Walk and swim at Psani Beach

Head back toward the sea for a break on Psani, the town beach, ideal for a swim or a stroll along the waterfront. The beach is free; an umbrella and sun loungers, when available, may cost around €8–15 for two people.

Bring water and sunscreen with you, especially in the summer months.

19:30

Dinner on the waterfront

End the day with an evening walk and dinner between the seafront and the harbor. Expect to spend around €18–30 per person for a meal with main courses and a drink, depending on the menu and type of restaurant.

In high season, it’s a good idea to reserve a table near the harbor.

Day 2 – Mountain Nafpaktia: villages and scenic roads

08:00–20:00 An active day by car, with stops on foot

Explore the inland villages and mountain scenery without packing too many visits into a walking-heavy day.

08:00

Departure from Nafpaktos

Set off early by car: the drive to Ano Chora usually takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes, but it can take longer because of hairpin bends, roadworks, or scenic stops. Have breakfast before leaving or bring a snack; budget roughly €5–10 for fuel on the first stretch, depending on the car.

Fill up in town: gas stations are less frequent in the mountain areas.

09:45

Stop in the village of Elatou

Make a short stop in Elatou for a stroll among the stone houses and a coffee break, without making the trip too long. From the village parking area, allow about 30–45 minutes; a coffee or drink costs roughly €2–5.

The road is winding: drive slowly and allow more time than the navigation system suggests.

11:00

Visit to Ano Chora

Spend about 1 hour and 30 minutes in the village, wandering through lanes, traditional houses, and small local shops. Stop for a coffee or a sweet in the square; visiting the village is free, while a drink usually costs €3–8.

On weekends and in summer, the center can be crowded: park in the designated spaces.

12:45

Mountain lunch in Ano Chora

Have lunch in a village taverna with home-style dishes, grilled meat, or seasonal specialties. Allow €15–25 per person for a full meal; options may be more limited out of season.

Ask which dishes are available that day, especially in the quieter months.

14:15

Ampelakiotissa Monastery

Continue by car to the monastery, allowing at least 30–45 minutes of mountain driving from Ano Chora and checking the route before setting off. Spend about 45 minutes visiting the accessible areas and viewing the building; admission is usually free, but you can leave a donation.

Opening hours are not always regular: check locally and respect any dress code guidance.

16:00

Stop in Platanos

Head to Platanos for a stroll through the village and a break before heading back, keeping in mind that the drive can take around 40–60 minutes on winding roads. Allow 45–60 minutes for the visit and an estimated spend of €3–8.

If the weather worsens, shorten this stop and prioritize getting back while there is still daylight.

17:15

Return to Nafpaktos

Set off back to Nafpaktos, allowing about 1 hour and 30 minutes or more depending on road conditions. Stop only at safe lay-bys to enjoy the views; the fuel cost for the return trip can range roughly from €8 to €15.

Don’t drive too fast: in the mountains, travel times are dictated by the bends and the visibility.

19:15

Relaxed dinner in Nafpaktos

After a day of driving, choose a tavern near your accommodation or the harbor and opt for dinner without any further travel. Plan on around €18–30 per person, depending on the courses and whether you choose fish or meat.

If you’re getting back late, check the kitchen hours first.

Day 3 – The western coast: beaches and villages on the gulf

09:00–18:30 Relaxed pace, with short drives

Follow the coast west of Nafpaktos, alternating between swims, walks, and stops in the towns and villages.

09:00

Departure for Skaloma

Reach Skaloma by car following the western coastal road; the trip from Nafpaktos is short, but the duration depends on your starting point and traffic. Take a walk along the beach and have breakfast or a coffee break, with an estimated spend of €3–8.

Bring water shoes if you’d rather move comfortably over the pebbly sections.

10:30

Swimming break at Skaloma Beach

Spend about an hour at the beach, ideal for a first swim or a leisurely walk along the shore. Access is free; any services and sunbeds depend on the season and can cost around €8–15 for two people.

In the low season, beach services may not be available.

12:00

Chiliadou Beach

Continue by car to Chiliadou, with a short transfer along the coast. Stop for a swim or a walk of about 1–1.5 hours; beach access is free and the cost of any refreshments varies depending on which services are open.

Check sea conditions before swimming and follow local advice.

13:30

Lunch on the coast

Have lunch at a taverna between Chiliadou and Monastiraki, choosing the place based on what’s open that day. A simple meal costs around €15–25 per person; during quieter periods, it’s wise to check opening hours in advance.

For a light lunch, bring water and a snack if you find the restaurants closed.

15:00

Monastiraki and a seaside stroll

Head to Monastiraki and wander between the village center and the seafront before stopping at the beach. The recommended time is about 45 minutes for the village and an hour for the coast; access is free, while a drink may cost around €2–5.

Park without blocking access to homes or local businesses.

16:00

Relax at Monastiraki Beach

Take one last break to swim or rest on the beach, choosing a comfortable spot depending on sea conditions. There is no entrance fee; sunbeds and umbrellas, if available, have indicative rates of €8–15 for two people.

Leave the beach clean and take your trash with you if you can’t find bins.

17:30

Return and final stroll in Nafpaktos

Drive back to Nafpaktos, allowing for about 25–40 minutes depending on traffic and stops. If you have time, take one last walk around the harbor before departure; the area is public and free.

Allow extra time for refueling or returning the rental car.

Practical tips

  • For the mountainous inland, a car is strongly recommended: public transport connections are limited and do not easily allow for a flexible itinerary.
  • Before setting off for the villages, check the weather, fuel and road conditions; travel times may take longer than expected.
  • Check opening hours for the castle, tower and monastery on site: opening times and admission fees may change depending on the season and day of the week.
  • In summer, bring water, a hat and sunscreen; for the beaches, consider shoes suitable for pebbles and check sea conditions.
