To explore Mylopotamos, with coastal spots like and and villages in the hinterland, a car is the most practical option. The national road links the northern coast with Rethymno and Heraklion, while reaching inland hamlets and attractions means taking narrower, winding roads. Some centers are served by KTEL intercity buses, but schedules and connections can be limited, especially out of season. If you are traveling by bus, check the latest timetables and plan your return journeys in advance. In summer, allow extra time for traffic and for finding parking near the beaches.
From May to June and from September to October, the climate is generally pleasant and makes it easy to combine the beach, village visits, and walks without the peak summer crowds. July and August are ideal for a seaside holiday, but they bring high temperatures, heavier crowds, and often higher prices. In spring, the inland areas are especially green, while in winter some facilities and tourist services may reduce their hours or close.
In the coastal resorts and inland towns, you will find tavernas and restaurants serving Cretan cuisine, with seasonal vegetables, local cheeses, grilled meats, and fish dishes in the seaside areas. In the villages, ask for the daily specials and check opening hours: outside peak season, some places open only on certain days. For a more casual meal, look for a taverna that is also popular with locals, and leave room for a dessert or a local spirit.
