BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

How to get around

Moscow’s metro is extensive, frequent, and often the fastest way to get around; some stations are also famous for their decoration and architecture. To pay for transport, check the Troika card or the contactless payment options accepted at the time of travel. Buses and trams complete the network, while for taxis it is best to use a reliable app and check the license plate before getting in. Traffic and service conditions can vary: check airport connections, timetables, and payment options in advance.

When to go

From May to September, the days are long and temperatures are generally milder, ideal for strolling through parks and along the river, but July and August can be crowded. Spring and early autumn often offer a good balance between weather and visitors. Winter is harsh and the days are short, but the city comes alive with lights and markets; very warm clothing and footwear suitable for ice are needed.

Where to eat

To sample Russian cuisine, look for places serving borsch, pel’meni, bliny, and buckwheat-based dishes; traditional cafeterias often offer simple, affordable meals. In the central districts and covered markets, there is a wide choice of restaurants and international cuisine, with varying prices. Check menus, opening hours, and payment methods before you go, and mention any dietary requirements: not all places have menus in English.

Quick tips

  1. Download offline maps and keep the address of your accommodation in Cyrillic as well, to show if needed.
  2. Before you travel, check which cards and payment services work in Russia: cards issued abroad may not be accepted.
  3. Buy tickets only through official channels and check the latest rules for museums, attractions, and transport.
  4. Carry an ID document and inform yourself about entry requirements and official guidance for travelers.
