Worth seeing, worth remembering.
This Byzantine church in the upper town stands on a rocky spur above the sea. Its location offers sweeping views over the coast and the rooftops of the rock.
Overlooking the main square of the lower town, it is one of the most important churches in Monemvasia. Inside, a revered icon of Christ is preserved.
Housed in the former mosque, the collection features artifacts that tell the city's long history. Be sure to admire the building itself, too, as it overlooks the central square.
This church with its white dome is located near the sea, in the eastern part of the lower town. It is a quiet and picturesque stop along the route between the walls and the seafront.
Head to the lighthouse on the southern tip of the rock to enjoy open sea views. The route along the walls offers memorable glimpses, especially in the golden hours.

How to get around
To explore the surrounding area, a car offers the greatest freedom: Monemvasia is reached from the mainland by crossing the bridge, while within the fortified town you get around entirely on foot. Leave your car in the outer parking areas, as the lanes in the old town are narrow, steep, and often paved with stone. In summer, the shuttle service between Gefyra, the settlement on the mainland, and the entrance to the old town can be useful: check schedules and availability on site. Buses connect the area with other places in the Peloponnese, but services can be limited; check timetables in advance.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are pleasant times to visit Monemvasia, with temperatures suitable for strolling and fewer crowds than in summer. From June to September, the days are hot and the old town can be very busy, especially around midday: plan your visits for the morning or late afternoon. Winter is quieter, but some services and facilities may have reduced hours.
Where to eat
In the fortified town and in Gefyra you’ll find tavernas, cafés, and restaurants, often with outdoor tables and sea views. Look for local dishes such as traditional pasta, slow-cooked meats, fish, and olive oil-based specialties. To go with your meal, ask for wines from the region, including those linked to the Malvasia tradition. During high season, it’s advisable to book, especially if you want to dine in the historic old town.

- 02Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen, especially if you climb up to the upper town, where there is little shade.
