Getting around
In the center of Mytilene, it’s easy to get around on foot, but to reach the island’s beaches and villages, a car is useful. Buses connect the town with several destinations, although frequency and routes may vary by season: check the updated timetables before setting out. Taxis and rental cars are available in town and near the airport, but in high season it’s advisable to book in advance. To explore the rural roads, drive carefully and keep in mind that travel times may be longer than expected.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are ideal for visiting Mytilene and touring the island, with mild temperatures and fewer crowds. Summer is hot and sunny, perfect for the sea, but it’s wise to book ahead and protect yourself from the sun. In spring, the landscape is especially green; in September, the sea is still pleasant and the atmosphere tends to be quieter.
Where to eat
The tavernas in the center and at the harbor are a great choice for sampling fish, mezedes, and dishes from Lesvos cuisine. Be sure to try Kalloni sardines, the local ladotyri cheese, and ouzo, the island’s historic spirit, often served with small bites. For a more casual meal, look for tavernas in the coastal villages and ask which fish dishes are fresh that day.
Quick tips
- 01Bring comfortable shoes: the center has some uphill stretches and uneven paving.
- 02Check the bus schedules, especially if you’re traveling outside high season or want to return from a village in the evening.
- 03In summer, book accommodation and rental cars in advance and bring water and sun protection with you.
- 04In restaurants, ask for the catch of the day and check whether the fish price is listed per kilo.
