BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

Getting around

Miercurea Ciuc's center is compact and easy to explore on foot. The city is connected by train to other places in Romania, but it is best to check schedules and connections in advance, as services can be infrequent. To explore the villages and landscapes of Harghita County, a car offers greater flexibility. Taxis and local buses are available in the city, but for evening travel it is useful to check departures in advance or book a taxi.

When to go

Spring and early autumn are ideal for walking and exploring the surroundings, with generally mild temperatures and scenic landscapes. Summer is pleasant compared with the hotter areas of Romania, although rain can occur. Winters are harsh and often snowy: they suit those looking for a mountain atmosphere, but they require thermal clothing and attention to road conditions.

Where to eat

In the city’s restaurants and inns, you’ll find specialties of Transylvanian and Székely cuisine, with hearty dishes such as soups, stews, and meat-based preparations. To sample local flavors, look for menus offering goulash, cheeses, and traditional sweets such as kürtőskalács. Offerings and opening hours may vary out of season, so it’s a good idea to check in advance and book on weekends.

Quick tips

  1. Bring layers: even on summer days, temperatures can drop in the evening.
  2. In winter, check the forecast and road conditions before traveling outside the city.
  3. Don’t assume that all services are available in English; learning a few words in Romanian can be useful.
  4. If you want to visit the surroundings, arrange transport and schedules in advance, especially on public holidays.
