This itinerary explores Ljubljana by area, so you can visit the historic center on foot and dedicate separate days to the museums, the creative district of Metelkova, and the southern bank of the Ljubljanica. Two excursions let you discover some of Slovenia’s best-known landscapes: Lake Bled and the Postojna Caves with Predjama Castle. The stops are arranged at a realistic pace, leaving time for breaks in cafés and transfers by bus or train. Costs and opening times are indicative and may vary depending on the season and opening hours.

Get your bearings in the heart of Ljubljana by following the Ljubljanica past squares, the market, and iconic landmarks.
10:00
Prešeren Square and Tromostovje
Start at the main square, easy to spot thanks to the pink church and the monument to the poet France Prešeren. Cross Tromostovje, the triple-bridge complex designed by Jože Plečnik, and notice how it connects the two banks of the pedestrianized center.
The area is easy to reach on foot from the station, in about 15 minutes.
11:15
Central Market
Stroll among the covered market stalls and the open-air ones, where you’ll find local produce, flowers, and snacks. For a casual bite, budget about €4–10; it’s busiest in the morning and on weekdays.
The market is normally open from Monday to Saturday, with seasonal hours; on Sundays and public holidays, don’t plan on shopping at the stalls. On those days, enjoy the outdoor walk among Plečnik’s architecture and choose an open café or restaurant for a snack.
12:30
St. Nicholas’s Cathedral
Reach the cathedral with a short walk from the market and linger over the bronze doors and the interior frescoes. Entry may be subject to worship hours or a small suggested fee, around €2–4.
Keep your clothing respectful during services.
13:30
Lunch in the center
Choose a gostilna or a place along the pedestrian streets to try Slovenian dishes such as jota or štruklji. A simple lunch costs roughly €12–20 per person, drink included.
For the most popular places, it's best to book ahead, especially on weekends.
15:00
Dragon Bridge and a riverside walk
Continue toward Dragon Bridge, famous for its copper sculptures and Secessionist style. From here, head back toward the center along the riverbanks, alternating bridges, terraces, and glimpses of the colorful façades.
The route is flat and takes about 30–45 minutes without stops.
18:30
Dinner and an aperitif on the Ljubljanica
End the day on one of the riverside terraces or in the pedestrian streets of the center. Expect to spend around 18–30 € for a full dinner; an aperitif can cost roughly 4–8 €.
The most central terraces are very busy on summer evenings.
Discover Ljubljana's historic skyline from above and stroll among the squares and churches of the old town.
09:30
Climb to Ljubljana Castle
Reach the castle on foot from the center with a climb of about 15–25 minutes, or take the funicular, whose round-trip ticket costs roughly 6–8 €. Take time to enjoy the courtyards and viewpoints before visiting the interior rooms.
Check the official website for exhibition and tower opening times.
11:00
Exhibitions and views from the castle
Explore the exhibition spaces and, if open, climb the panoramic tower for a view over the rooftops of the center and the Alps on clear days. Access to the exhibitions and tower may require an indicative ticket of 10–16 €, often with combination offers.
Allow about 90 minutes for an unhurried visit.
13:00
Lunch in the historic center
Head down toward the center and stop at a trattoria in the streets below the castle. A main course costs roughly 10–18 €, while a full lunch can come to 20–28 €.
The walk downhill is pleasant, though some stretches are cobbled.
15:00
Congress Square
Cross the square, one of the city's most important urban spaces, and take in the historic buildings and tree-lined park. It's a free and convenient stop on foot before reaching the next sights in the center.
Allow about 30 minutes, longer if you want to linger in a café.
16:15
Church of St. James and old streets
Reach St. James's Church by walking through the streets of the old town; inside, the Baroque altar and historic furnishings stand out. Check on arrival whether visits are possible, as opening times may be limited by religious services.
A walk of about 10–15 minutes from the square.
18:30
Evening between Stari trg and Gornji trg
Stroll among the Baroque facades and small spots in the old center, choosing a restaurant for dinner. Budget around 18–30 € per person for a full meal, depending on the venue.
The area is easy to explore on foot and requires no transportation.
Explore Slovenian art and history in depth and take a break outdoors in the city’s main park.
10:00
National Museum of Slovenia
Start at 10:00 at the National Museum building at Muzejska ulica 1 and choose an itinerary of about 90 minutes through the archaeological and historical collections. Finish around 11:30 to reach the Museum of Modern Art by 11:45. For a more in-depth visit, delay the later stops. Admission is estimated at 6–10 €: check the travel price list.
Check for any weekly closures and temporary exhibitions.
11:45
Museum of Modern Art
Continue to the museum dedicated to Slovenian and international modern art, just a few minutes away on foot. The visit takes about an hour and the indicative admission cost may range from 5 to 10 €.
The collections and accessible spaces may change depending on the exhibitions.
13:00
Lunch break between museums
Choose a bistro near the park or head back toward the center: casual spots typically offer lunches ranging from 10 to 18 €. Leave a little extra time to reach the National Gallery without rushing.
The neighborhood is walkable; allow 10–15 minutes between one venue and the next.
14:30
National Gallery of Slovenia
Visit the main collection of Slovenian historical art, with works from the Middle Ages to the 20th century and rooms housed in a building of great interest. Allow about 90 minutes and an indicative admission fee of 8–12 €.
For a more in-depth visit, check the availability of audio guides or guided tours.
16:30
Tivoli Park
Enter the park and stroll along the tree-lined avenues toward Tivoli Castle, among flower beds, sculptures and green spaces popular with locals. The walk is free and can last from 45 minutes to two hours.
With comfortable shoes, you can continue along the gently rising trails.
18:30
Dinner near the city center
Head back toward the center on foot, in about 15–20 minutes, and choose a restaurant for a relaxed dinner. A full meal costs roughly 18–30 € per person.
Museums have different days and opening hours: plan your visits according to the updated schedule.
Explore creative Ljubljana and its museums in the eastern area, near the station.
10:00
Slovenian Ethnographic Museum
From 10:00, devote about an hour and a half to a selection of exhibits on cultures, traditions, and everyday life in Slovenia and around the world. Wrap up around 11:30, leaving time to reach the outdoor spaces of Metelkova by 11:45. The ticket price range remains 6–10 €; check the actual option available. For a two-hour visit, move the next stop later.
Check the temporary exhibitions and weekly opening times.
11:45
Metelkova mesto
Stroll through the cultural complex created on the site of a former barracks, among murals, installations, and independent spaces. Access to the outdoor areas is generally free; some galleries and events may have different opening times or admission policies.
It is a vibrant cultural place: respect the spaces and the activities taking place.
13:00
Lunch in the neighborhood
Stop at a casual place in the Metelkova area or near the station. For a simple lunch, expect around 10–18 €; vegetarian options are fairly common.
Short distances: the morning stops are within walking distance.
14:30
Ljubljana Railway Museum
Head to the railway museum, a little further north: from the center you can get there in about 10–15 minutes by taxi or city bus, or with a walk of around 30 minutes. The locomotives and historical objects are worth about 60–90 minutes; check opening hours and admission in advance, typically 5–10 €.
The location and tours may have limited or seasonal opening hours.
17:00
Return and break in the center
Head back toward the center by city bus or taxi and take a break before dinner. For the bus, you need an Urbana card or an accepted payment system; a single ride costs about 1–2 €.
Check the routes and schedules in the app or on the local public transport website.
18:30
Dinner and an evening in Metelkova
If you’re interested in the evening cultural scene, return to Metelkova after dinner for a concert or event, checking the day’s program. A casual dinner costs roughly 15–25 €; event entry fees vary.
The program changes often and not every evening includes events open to the public.
See the lake and Bled Castle, and choose either the island in the afternoon or, when the schedule and connections allow, Vintgar Gorge. The two options should not be automatically added together.
07:30
Transfer from Ljubljana to Bled
Make your way to the bus station and catch a connection to Bled, with a journey of about 1 hour and 15 minutes–1 hour and 40 minutes depending on the service. A one-way ticket costs roughly 7–12 €; check the timetable in advance, especially on weekends.
The train may require a change or transfer from Lesce-Bled station.
09:15
Walk along the shores of Lake Bled
Start with a stretch of the path that runs along the lake and take in the island, the castle on the cliff, and the mountain views. The full loop is about 6 km and takes 1.5–2 hours, but you can choose a shorter section.
Bring water and suitable shoes; in summer the route is very busy.
11:30
Bled Castle
Walk up to the castle, with a steep climb of about 20–30 minutes, or consider a local taxi. In addition to the views, visit the museum and historic areas; admission costs roughly 15–20 €.
The paving can be slippery when it rains.
13:30
Lunch and a taste of kremšnita
Have lunch in Bled with a local dish or a light meal, roughly 12–22 €. If you want to try kremšnita, the typical cream cake, a portion costs about 5–8 €.
The lakeside venues tend to be more expensive than those on the inner streets.
15:00
Church of the Assumption of Maria on the island
If you choose the afternoon on the island, get there by traditional pletna or rowboat and check separately the cost of transport and any entrance fee to the church. Allow time for waiting, the crossing, and the visit, and agree on the return trip before boarding. This option replaces Vintgar for the day: do not also schedule entry to the gorge at 16:45.
The pletna service publishes a reduced 10:00–15:00 window from November to March: 15:00 does not guarantee another boarding with a useful return. Check departures and the last return, and bring the visit forward if needed; if the weather is poor, stay on the lakeshore.
Alternativa da prenotare
Vintgar: alternative instead of the island
If you prefer Vintgar, replace the afternoon island visit and book a time slot allowed by the gorge schedule. Allow at least three hours for the full route, plus transfers to and from Bled, and check the return connection to Ljubljana in advance. Do not treat it as a visit to start at 16:45: if you cannot find a slot compatible with the time available, keep the lake plan and skip the gorge.
Vintgar is seasonal and requires checking opening status, weather, and your reserved time slot. The published schedule shows a 09:00–15:00 window from September 21 until the end of the season: also check the last entry time; in winter the gorge is closed. Do not automatically replace the full route with just the duration of the boardwalk section.
Visit one of the country’s most famous karst systems and the castle built into the rock face.
07:30
From Ljubljana to Postojna
Take a bus or train to Postojna: the journey usually takes about 1–1.5 hours, with times varying depending on the connection. Tickets cost approximately 6–12 € one way; check connections and timetables before departure.
Postojna railway station is not the same as the cave entrance: allow for a walk or a taxi.
10:00
Postojna Cave
Book the 10:00 slot, if available on your chosen date, for the guided visit with the little train and the walking route through the karst chambers. The experience lasts about an hour and a half and then leaves time for a break before Predjama. If only a later slot is available, adjust lunch, the castle visit, and the return accordingly. The editorial price range for the cave ticket remains 30–40 €, with combined options to be checked.
For a 10:00 slot, arrive at the park by 09:30: the operator requires a 30-minute buffer and boarding the little train takes place 15 minutes before. Bring a jacket and closed shoes for the cave’s cool temperature.
11:30
Break and transfer to Predjama
Stop near the tourist area for a snack or an early lunch, with an estimated spend of 10–18 €. To reach the castle, consider a seasonal shuttle, an organized tour, or a taxi: direct public connections may be limited.
Plan this transfer in advance, especially outside peak season.
13:30
Predjama Castle
Visit the castle built into the cliff, exploring the interior rooms and passages tied to its medieval history. Allow about 1–1.5 hours; entry costs approximately 18–25 €, with possible combined tickets with the cave.
Access to the higher sections may involve stairs and narrow passages.
16:00
Return to Postojna and Ljubljana
Head back to Postojna with the arranged transport, then continue by bus or train to Ljubljana. Allow about 1–1.5 hours for the return journey and budget roughly €6–12 for the connection.
Leave some buffer between the visit and departure: shuttles and connections are not always frequent.
End the trip among Plečnik’s legacy, Roman remains, and the parks along the Ljubljanica.
10:00
Plečnik House
If available, book the 10:00 visit to the house and studio of Jože Plečnik. Access to the original home is only possible on a guided tour: public slots start every full hour and are limited to a maximum of seven people. Allow about an hour; the ticket for the permanent exhibition and house is currently €12, to be checked again before your trip. Finish in time to reach the Roman walls by 11:15; if you book a later slot, adjust the following stops accordingly.
Check in advance which languages are available, the time slots, and access to the rooms.
11:15
Roman Wall of Ljubljana
Visit the remains of the Roman walls in the Mirje area, designed and integrated into the urban landscape by Plečnik as well. The site is outdoors and free to visit; allow about 20–30 minutes to see the preserved section.
The area is exposed to the sun and has few immediate amenities.
12:00
Lunch in Trnovo
Stop at a café or restaurant in the neighborhood, which is less central but pleasant for a quiet break. A simple lunch costs roughly €10–18, while a more substantial meal can reach €25.
From the center, it’s about a 15–20-minute walk.
13:30
Ljubljana Botanical Garden
Stroll through the oldest botanical garden in Slovenia, among greenhouses, plant collections, and shady paths. Entry to the outdoor areas may be free or require a fee; for the greenhouses, expect roughly 2–6 € and check access for the day.
The blooms and the sections open to visitors change with the season.
15:00
Špica and the riverside walk
Head to Špica, the green tip where the Ljubljanica splits between the route toward the center and the Gruber Canal. The area is free and pleasant for an outdoor break; you can then continue along the Ljubljanica toward the center with a walk of about 20–30 minutes.
In summer it’s a good place to take a break, but bring water with you.
17:00
Last hours in the center and dinner
Head back to the center to buy local products or take one last stroll among the embankments and squares. For handmade souvenirs, budget 5–10 € for small items; a final dinner costs around 18–30 € per person.
If you’re leaving the next morning, check the airport or station connection in advance.
| Accommodation for 6 nights, per person in a double room | 240–660 € |
| Meals and drinks for 7 days | 180–350 € |
| Urban transport and connections for excursions | 45–110 € |
| Museum, castle and attraction entrance fees | 70–160 € |
The local currency is the euro (€), so no exchange needs to be considered. The figures are estimates per person, excluding travel to reach Slovenia, insurance, and personal expenses; accommodation, entrance fees, shuttles, and transfers may vary depending on the season, availability, and booking.
