Discover the main sights of the old town on foot and head up to the castle to admire Ljubljana from above.
10:00
Prešeren Square
Start at the main square, the meeting point between the old town and the modern city. Admire the statue of the poet France Prešeren and the pink façade of the Franciscan church; allow about 25 minutes for the visit and photos.
The square is outdoors and free to visit.
10:30
Triple Bridge
Cross the Triple Bridge, the three-passageway complex designed around the central bridge by Jože Plečnik. From here you can take in the course of the Ljubljanica and the terraces lining the river; the walk from the square takes just a few minutes.
Free entry; in the morning the area is often less crowded.
11:00
Ljubljana Central Market
Continue to the central market to see the food stalls and the arcades designed by Plečnik along the river. Stop for a snack or to buy local products; allow 45–60 minutes, depending on how busy it is.
The market is normally open from Monday to Saturday and closed on Sundays and public holidays. On those days, admire the arcades and squares from the outside, without planning shopping or snack stops at the stalls; check seasonal opening hours.
12:00
Dragon Bridge
Reach the Dragon Bridge in about 5–10 minutes on foot and look for the four large statues guarding its entrances. The bridge is one of the city’s symbols and offers a good vantage point over the river and the market area.
The visit is free and takes about 15–20 minutes.
12:30
Lunch in the old town
Head back toward the pedestrian streets along the Ljubljanica and choose a tavern or a place with outdoor tables. To sample local cuisine, look for Slovenian dishes such as kranjska klobasa or štruklji; allow about an hour for lunch.
A simple meal costs around 12–20 EUR per person; drinks and more elaborate dishes can increase the bill.
14:00
Climb and visit Ljubljana Castle
Take the funicular at the foot of the hill or walk up the paths, allowing about 20–30 minutes for the uphill climb. Set aside 1.5–2 hours for the castle, courtyards, and viewpoints; access to some exhibitions or the tower may require a ticket.
The standard Castle Ticket currently costs 15 EUR, or 19 EUR with the funicular; other options have their own rates. Check the official price list and opening hours for your visit date.
16:30
Walk along the banks of the Ljubljanica
Head down toward the center and stroll along the river among the bridges and facades of the old town. You can stop for a coffee or, if you find a suitable departure, join a boat ride of about 45 minutes to see the city from the water.
The walk is free; the boat trip costs roughly 12–18 EUR and schedules and availability change with the season and conditions.
19:00
Dinner in the pedestrian center
End the day on one of the streets in the center, choosing a table near the river or in the lanes behind the market square. For a relaxed dinner, allow 1.5–2 hours and book ahead during busy periods.
Plan on about 20–35 EUR per person for dinner with a main course and a drink; more upscale places can cost more.
