Lemnos is an island in the northern Aegean that wins visitors over with medieval castles, ancient cities, and landscapes shaped by the wind and volcanoes. Between an archaeological visit and a swim in a quiet bay, you’ll discover an authentic Greece rich in history and local flavors.

Housed in a neoclassical building in Myrina, it brings together artifacts that tell the island’s long history, from prehistory to the Roman era. It’s a useful stop to prepare for visiting the archaeological sites.
Looking out over Vroskopos Bay, it preserves the remains of one of the oldest urban settlements in the Aegean. Its different stages of development make it possible to trace the city’s evolution over the millennia.
The ruins of ancient Hephaistia include the remains of buildings, fortifications, and a theater, a testament to the city’s central role in the history of Lemnos. The site is located in the northeastern part of the island.
This ancient place of worship, dedicated to the Cabeiri, overlooks the sea not far from Hephaistia. Its secluded location and archaeological remains create a special atmosphere, linked to the island’s rites and myths.
In the northern part of Lemnos, these dunes create an unusual, almost desert-like landscape shaped by the wind. They make for a pleasant walk and a chance to admire a different side of the island.

Myrina is a good base, but to reach beaches, villages, and archaeological sites, it’s convenient to rent a car. The main roads are generally paved; for some coves and rural areas you’ll travel on dirt roads, so drive with caution. Buses connect Myrina with some places, but services can be infrequent, especially outside the summer season. Alternatively, you can use taxis, checking availability and fares in advance for longer trips.
From June to September the weather is warm and sunny, ideal for the sea; July and August are the busiest and windiest months. May, June, and September offer pleasant temperatures and a quieter atmosphere, although some seasonal services may have reduced hours. In spring the island is green and in bloom, while in winter many tourist activities slow down.
In Myrina and in the towns of Moudros and Kontias you’ll find tavernas and restaurants where you can sample Greek cuisine and island specialties. Look for Kalathaki Limnou cheese, flomaria, a local pasta, and the catch of the day, as well as honey and wines produced in Lemnos. In smaller places, the choice may be limited: in high season it’s wise to book dinner in advance and check opening hours.
