Getting around
To explore Kythnos freely, the most practical option is to rent a car; scooters and ATVs are alternatives, but they require caution on the narrow, winding roads. The main port is Merichas, from which the villages and beaches can be reached by car. In high season there may be buses, but services are limited and not always convenient for visiting coves and remote areas: check timetables and connections locally. Some beaches require driving on unpaved roads, so ask the rental company which routes are allowed. Bring water with you and keep in mind that gas stations and services may be far apart.
When to go
From May to June and from September to early October, you’ll find pleasant temperatures, sea conditions suitable for swimming, and a generally quieter atmosphere. July and August are the hottest and busiest months, with the meltemi wind sometimes making some days windy and affecting sea connections. In spring and autumn, some services and connections may be reduced: check availability before you travel.
Where to eat
The tavernas of Merichas, , and serve Greek cuisine and local island specialties. Look for traditional dishes such as sfougato, an egg and cheese preparation, and kolopita, a local savory pie; there’s also plenty of fish and regional produce. In summer, it’s wise to book dinner in advance, especially at the most popular places, and ask which dishes are available that day.
