Getting around
Klagenfurt’s historic center is compact and easy to explore on foot. To reach Wörthersee and the more distant districts, you can use the city buses; check timetables and connections, as they may vary in the evening and on public holidays. Biking is an excellent choice in the warmer months, thanks to the routes along the lake and in the surrounding area. For excursions in the region, trains and buses connect the city with several destinations in Carinthia. If you’re arriving by car, check parking rules in advance and any paid zones.
When to go
From May to September, the climate is generally best for enjoying the lake, walks, and outdoor activities; July and August are also the liveliest and busiest months. Spring and early autumn offer a quieter atmosphere, but the weather can be changeable. In winter, the city is less focused on beach activities, but it can be pleasant for visiting the center and enjoying seasonal events.
Where to eat
To taste Carinthian cuisine, look for dishes such as Kärntner Kasnudeln, traditional filled dumplings, and freshwater fish specialties. In the historic center you’ll find restaurants, cafés, and international eateries; for regional products and a casual meal, take a stroll through Benediktinermarkt, checking opening days and hours. In summer, the venues near Wörthersee are a lovely choice, but at peak times it’s wise to book ahead.
