Kissamos town center is easy to explore on foot, while to visit the surrounding beaches and villages it is useful to have a car. KTEL buses connect Kissamos with Chania, but frequencies and timetables can vary depending on the season: check them before you set off. Boats depart from the port for excursions to Balos and Gramvousa, often a convenient way to reach the lagoon. If you go to Balos by car, check the road conditions in advance and bear in mind that the last stretch may be unpaved.
From May to June and from September to early October, the weather is generally pleasant and there are fewer visitors than in the peak summer months. July and August are ideal for the sea, but they bring high temperatures, larger crowds, and greater demand for accommodation and excursions. In spring the landscape is green and in bloom; in autumn the sea often remains suitable for swimming, although some services may reduce their opening hours.
In the town center and along the port you will find tavernas and restaurants where you can taste fish, meze, and Cretan dishes such as dakos, seasonal vegetables, and grilled meats. Also look for local products, including olive oil, cheeses, and wine from the Kissamos area. In high season it is a good idea to book dinner at the most popular places; for a quieter meal, try eating outside peak hours.
