Day 1 – Kandanos and descent into the Agia Irini Gorges

09:00–18:00 Moderate trekking

Discover Kandanos’ historical memory and cross the mountain landscape to the coast of Sougia.

09:00

Historical Monument of Kandanos

Spend about 45 minutes at the monument and the commemorative elements remembering the village’s destruction during World War II. It is easily reached on foot from the center of Kandanos; also take in the village setting before continuing by car to the entrance of the gorges, with an estimated transfer of 25–35 minutes. The memorial area is usually open to visit free of charge; allow €0–3 for any informational materials or contributions, as an approximate estimate.

Maintain a respectful tone during the visit and check locally whether panels or guided tours are available.

10:45

Agia Irini Gorge

From the trailhead, follow the gorge downhill toward Sougia: allow about 3–4 hours for the hike, including breaks, over a route of around 7,5 km. The path passes through rocky cliffs and Mediterranean vegetation; bring water, sun protection, and footwear with good grip. Access costs can vary: budget roughly €0–5 and check any tickets, trail conditions, and official guidance before setting off.

Arrange transportation to the trailhead in advance and check how to return or continue on from Sougia; avoid the route in intense heat or adverse weather conditions.

Day 2 – Sougia and the archaeological site of Lissos

09:00–18:00 Hike and cultural visit

Explore the coast of Sougia and walk to the archaeological valley of Lissos.

09:00

Coastal village of Sougia

Set aside about an hour for the small village center and the seafront, also ideal for buying water and something to take with you on the trail. Sougia is the most practical starting point for Lissos: the hiking route usually takes about 1–1,5 hours each way, depending on pace and conditions. The walk through the village and along the waterfront is free; plan for around €5–12 for breakfast or a snack, as an indicative cost.

As an alternative to the trail, check whether boat connections to Lissos are available on your travel date; do not assume they will be.

10:15

Archaeological Site of Lissos

Reach Lissos from the coastal trail, allowing about 1–1,5 hours of walking and stretches exposed to the sun. Spend at least 45 minutes observing the remains scattered across the valley and the relationship between the ancient settlement and the secluded landscape. Consider €0–5 as an indicative expense for entry or any contributions; check official information and the trail status before your visit.

Bring enough water for the round trip: there are no services along the way that you should rely on.

11:15

Temple of Asclepius

Within the Lissos area, walk to the remains of the sanctuary dedicated to Asclepius and spend 30–45 minutes visiting it. Take in the sacred site's setting in the valley and the architectural remains without climbing on or moving stones. This stop is part of the archaeological visit: allow €0–5 in total as an indicative cost for entry or contributions, to be verified on the official site or with the relevant authorities.

After the visit, return to Sougia along the same route, allowing another 1–1.5 hours; plan for a break and a meal on the way back.

Day 3 – Anidri Gorges, sea and Paleochora

09:00–18:00 Light trekking and scenic stops

Follow the route through the Anidri Gorges to the sea and finish with a visit to the castle in Paleochora.

09:00

Anidri Gorges

From Paleochora, drive or take a taxi to the village of Anidri and the trailhead; the transfer takes about 15–25 minutes. The descent through the gorge is about 3 km and takes roughly 1–1.5 hours, with uneven ground and rocky sections: take your time to walk carefully and enjoy the cliffs and vegetation. The route is generally a walk with no ticket required, but allow €0–5 for any local costs or access transport.

Check the trail conditions and arrange your return from Gialiskari; do not enter the gorge after rain or with unsuitable footwear.

11:00

Gialiskari Beach

At the end of the descent, reach the beach for a break of about two hours: choose a sheltered spot, swim only if sea conditions allow, and set aside time for lunch. There is usually no entrance fee for the beach stop; allow €8–20 for a meal or refreshments, depending on your choice and the services available. To then get to Paleochora, plan for a taxi or car transfer, arranged in advance.

Bring water, snacks, and sun protection: services and connections may be limited or subject to change.

14:30

Selino Castle in Paleochora

Reach the castle on the Paleochora peninsula and spend 45–60 minutes visiting the area and taking in the coastal views. From the center, it’s a short walk; allow an additional 10–20 minutes depending on your starting point. External access may be free, but allow €0–5 as an estimate for any costs or visits and check the official directions before you go.

End with a stroll through the center of Paleochora; check on site whether the castle areas are accessible.

Practical tips

  • Renting a car or arranging taxis and transfers in advance makes trail access and the return from the gorges easier.
  • For both hikes, bring at least 1.5–2 liters of water per person, shoes with good grip, a hat, and sunscreen.
  • Check the weather, trail conditions, and local advisories: routes through the gorges can become dangerous after rain or in high temperatures.
  • For tickets, boat transfers, and archaeological information, consult official sources or local operators: availability and costs may change.
