THE PLACES THAT TELL KALAVRYTA
Worth seeing, worth remembering.
On the hill above the town, the memorial marks the site where the men of Kalavryta were killed during the German occupation. The large cross and the view over the valley invite a respectful, quiet visit.
This historic monastery is tied to the Greek War of Independence and the tradition of blessing the revolutionary flag in 1821. A visit here lets you discover its church, relics, and museum.
Built against a rocky cliff, the monastery stands out for its dramatic location and long religious history. Inside, it houses an icon of the Virgin Mary that, according to tradition, was made by the Apostle Luke.
Near the village of Kastria, this cave is famous for its underground lakes and limestone formations shaped by water. The equipped trail passes through striking spaces with stalactites, stalagmites, and natural pools.

Getting around
Kalavryta’s center is compact and easy to explore on foot. To get there, one of the most scenic options is the Odontotos cog railway, which connects the town with Diakopto by crossing the Vouraikos Gorge. Timetables may vary depending on the season and service conditions: check them before setting off and consider booking. A car is useful for exploring the surrounding area, but mountain roads require careful driving, especially in winter.
When to go
Spring and autumn are ideal for walks and hikes, thanks to generally mild temperatures and mountain scenery. Summer offers pleasant days for visiting the area, while in winter Kalavryta is a popular destination for snow and sports on nearby Mount Chelmos.
