Getting around
Kalamaria is easy to explore on foot, especially along the seafront and around the small harbor, but to move between neighborhoods it’s best to use the city buses. The routes connect the municipality with central Thessaloniki and other parts of the city; check updated timetables and routes before you go. Taxis are also convenient, especially in the evening or if you have luggage. If you use the Thessaloniki metro, check which stations and connections are actually operating during your stay. To reach the beaches and out-of-town spots, consider a car or intercity buses.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are ideal for strolling along the seafront and enjoying the terraces without the hottest weather. Summer is lively and perfect for those who want to spend time by the sea, but it can be very hot and crowded. In winter the weather is cooler and rainier, while the spots frequented by locals remain a good way to experience everyday life in the area.
Where to eat
For fish and seafood, look for tavernas and restaurants around and the Aretsou harbor, where it’s lovely to dine by the water. In the inland neighborhoods you’ll also find casual places serving souvlaki, meze, and Greek dishes. At lunchtime, check whether there are set menus and ask about seasonal specialties; on weekends it’s a good idea to book ahead.
Quick tips
- 01Check bus timetables in advance and the options for buying or validating tickets.
- 02To reach central Thessaloniki, allow extra time during rush hour.
- 03Wear comfortable shoes: the seafront is pleasant to explore on foot, but some distances between neighborhoods are considerable.
- 04In summer, book the most popular restaurants in advance and bring water and sunscreen for your walks.
Wake up in the right place.
