Getting around
Innsbruck’s city center is compact and easy to explore on foot, especially between the Golden Roof and the Inn River. To reach more distant districts and attractions, you can use the IVB tram and bus network. From the airport, bus line F connects the terminal with the main station and the city center: check timetables and frequency before you travel. The city also has cycle paths and rental services, useful in the warmer months. If you plan to make several visits, consider a tourist card and compare what’s included with your itinerary.
When to go
Summer is ideal for strolling through the city and hiking in the mountains, but it is also a busy time: book ahead in July and August. Spring and autumn offer milder temperatures and a generally calm atmosphere, although Alpine weather can change quickly. Winter is perfect for snow sports and Christmas markets, with cold days and possible snowfall. In every season, bring layers and check the conditions of trails and mountain lifts.
Where to eat
In the historic center you’ll find traditional restaurants and casual spots where you can try Tyrolean specialties such as dumplings, gröstl and apple strudel. For a quick meal or to browse local products, take a walk through the Markthalle, near the Inn. In neighborhoods just outside the center, you’ll often find inns frequented by locals too, while up in the mountains huts and alpine lodges serve hearty dishes with mountain views. During peak season, it’s advisable to book dinner.
