Getting around
Ilioupoli is connected to central Athens by Metro Line 2, with the station of the same name in the southern part of the neighborhood. To get there from the airport, you can take Line 3 to Syntagma and change to Line 2 toward Elliniko. Buses and taxis are useful for getting around areas not close to the metro, but travel times can vary a lot with traffic. In some areas there are hills: if you’re traveling on foot, it’s worth taking distances and elevation changes into account.
When to go
Spring and autumn are the most pleasant times to visit Ilioupoli and Athens, thanks to generally mild temperatures and days that are ideal for walking. Summer can be very hot, especially in the middle of the day, while winter is cooler and sometimes rainy. To explore the trails on the slopes of Mount Hymettus, it’s best to choose a dry day and set out in the morning.

Ilioupoli is a residential area with tavernas, cafés, and venues mostly frequented by local residents. Look along the shopping streets and squares for home-style Greek food, mezedes, and souvlaki; for a quieter meal, head away from the main roads.
