Ilio is a little-visited base on the western outskirts of Athens: its appeal lies mainly in neighborhood life and the large Antonis Tritsis Metropolitan Park, while the surrounding area preserves some of the region’s most significant sights. The first day is dedicated to central Ilio and nearby Peristeri; the second explores the park and the historic Queen’s Tower at a leisurely pace. The third takes you to Chaidari, between the Diomedes Botanical Garden and the Dafni Monastery, a UNESCO site. Getting around requires mainly buses, taxis, or combinations with the metro, since Ilio does not have a metro station in its center.

Get to know the center of Ilio and continue on to the public spaces and cafes of nearby Peristeri.
10:00
Start of the visit at Plateia Ilion
Start from the central square, a useful place to get your bearings and watch the daily rhythm of Ilio, among cafes, shops, and residents passing by. Spend about 30–40 minutes in the area and have breakfast in one of the local spots; a drink and a small snack cost roughly €4–8.
The center is more pleasant in the morning, before the hottest hours.
10:50
Ilio Town Hall
Walk to the town hall, a short distance from the square, for a stop mainly outside and to observe the neighborhood’s civic buildings. The offices are not a tourist attraction and access to the interior may be restricted: allow 15–20 minutes and no visit cost.
Respect service areas and do not enter the offices without permission.
11:30
Church of Saint Anargyroi? No: visit to the church of Saint Fanourios
Make your way to the church of Saint Fanourios and, if it is open, go inside with respectful clothing to observe the icons and elements of Orthodox worship. Allow 20–30 minutes; the visit is normally free, but it may be limited during services.
The heading for this stop indicates the church of Saint Fanourios; check opening hours on site.
12:30
Lunch in the center of Ilio
Stop at a taverna or a Greek restaurant around the center, choosing daily specials, salads, or souvlaki. For a simple lunch, budget about €10–18 per person; leave time for a break out of the heat during the hottest hours.
The menus displayed outside help compare prices and portions.
15:00
Transfer and walk in Peristeri Grove
Continue to Peristeri by city bus or taxi: the journey varies depending on your starting point and traffic, so allow about 20–35 minutes. In the park, take a relaxed walk along the tree-lined paths and rest areas; admission is free.
Check routes and schedules on the official Athens transport app: lines may change.
17:00
Stop at Peristeri Square
Head to Peristeri’s main square, lively with shops, cafés, and outdoor tables. It’s a good chance for a Greek coffee or a sweet treat, roughly €3–7, and to take in the neighborhood atmosphere in the late afternoon.
The square and the park are close together and can be visited comfortably on foot.
19:00
Dinner and return to Ilio
Have dinner in the Peristeri area or head back to Ilio by bus or taxi, depending on the most convenient stop and the time. For a casual dinner with a main dish and a drink, expect about €15–25 per person; leave some extra time for possible delays in public transport.
If you’re returning late, check the last practical departure in advance.
Explore Ilio’s main green lung and discover the history of the former royal estate at a relaxed pace.
09:00
Departure and entrance to Antonis Tritsis Park
Reach the park by local bus or taxi from the center of Ilio; the trip is short but depends on the stop and traffic. Bring water and a hat with you: the area is large and entry to the park is free.
Check in advance which entrance is most convenient for the area you want to visit.
09:45
Walk among ponds and tree-lined avenues
Spend about two hours on the park’s trails and wetlands, alternating shady stretches with stops by the ponds. Bring binoculars if you’re interested in birdwatching and stay on the marked paths; no tickets are required for the walk.
The surfaces and the amount of shade vary from one trail to another.
12:00
Lunch break in the park or nearby
Take a break at a picnic area or head to a nearby venue by the park, checking on site which services are open that day. For a simple lunch or a picnic bought nearby, budget around €8–15 per person.
Don’t rely on food outlets being open all the time: bring a snack and water.
13:30
Queen’s Tower
Head toward Pyrgos Vasilissis, the historic tower tied to the 19th-century royal estate. The building is not necessarily open for free visits: access to the interior depends on guided tours or events, so treat this stop as an exterior viewing if you can’t find a bookable tour.
Check availability and access conditions before setting off; any visits may have a variable cost.
15:00
Second loop through the green areas
Continue the walk by choosing a different stretch of the park and stopping in the quieter areas to take in the landscape and vegetation. Allow 60–90 minutes, without trying to cross the entire area in one go.
In summer, avoid the hottest hours and bring at least one bottle of water per person.
17:00
Return and evening in Ilio
Leave the park from the most convenient exit and head back by bus or taxi, allowing for varying travel times depending on the service available. End the day with dinner in the center: a casual meal costs roughly €15–25 per person.
Save the location of the entrance you used so you can easily find the stop on the way back.
Combine the biodiversity of the Diomede Botanical Garden with the Byzantine heritage of the Monastery of Dafni.
09:00
Transfer from Ilio to Chaidari
For the Diomede Botanical Garden, the most direct option is often a taxi, with an estimated journey of 20–35 minutes depending on traffic; alternatively, combine bus and metro, checking the latest connections. Allow around €10–20 for a taxi ride, varying based on distance and fare.
Ask the driver to drop you at the garden entrance: the area is large.
09:45
Visit to the Diomedes Botanical Garden
Set aside about two hours for the botanical trails, plant collections, and Mediterranean landscapes of the garden. Admission is generally free, but opening hours, closures, and guided-tour availability may vary: check official updates before you go.
Wear comfortable shoes and check local rules, especially in research areas.
12:00
Break and transfer to Dafni
Grab a snack or lunch nearby, then continue to the monastery by taxi or available transport; the distance between the two stops is short, but public transit may require transfers. Budget around €8–15 for a simple lunch and 15–30 minutes for the transfer.
If you use the bus, check the stops on site: not all lines serve both entrances directly.
14:00
Daphni Monastery
Visit the Byzantine complex, known for its mosaics and included on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Allow 60–90 minutes; admission may be free or subject to specific conditions, but opening times and accessibility may change because of works or conservation needs.
Check in advance whether it has reopened and under what visiting conditions: do not assume the interior is accessible.
15:45
Walk around the monastery surroundings
After your visit, take a break in the surrounding area and enjoy the hilly landscape of Chaidari without leaving the accessible paths. Allow 30–45 minutes and bring water, as facilities may be limited near the site.
Avoid entering closed or unmarked areas of the complex.
17:00
Return to Ilios and final dinner
Return by taxi or by a combination of bus and metro, leaving a buffer for traffic and connections. For the final dinner in Ilios, budget about €15–25 per person; if you have a flight or transfer the following morning, choose a place close to your accommodation.
Buy or validate your travel ticket according to the current rules and allow enough time for transfers.
