The museum tells the story of Thesprotia through finds ranging from prehistory to the Roman era. It is a worthwhile visit to learn about the region’s past before exploring its archaeological sites.
IgoumenitsaEpirus · Greece
One destination.
A thousand ways to live it.
Overlooking the Ionian Sea, Igoumenitsa blends the atmosphere of a port city with the beauty of the beaches and landscapes of Epirus. It is also an excellent starting point for exploring nearby archaeological sites and coastal towns.
Worth seeing, worth remembering.
The port is the maritime heart of the city and one of the main links between Greece and Italy. Even a walk around the area reveals the dynamic character of Igoumenitsa.
This long sandy beach stretches north of the city, along a peninsula washed by the gulf’s waters. It is a convenient choice for a seaside break without straying far from Igoumenitsa.
The ruins of Gitana, the ancient capital of Thesprotia, include remains of fortifications, buildings, and a theater. The site lies inland, in a peaceful landscape that invites you to imagine life in the ancient city.
Perched in a mountain setting near Filiates, this historic monastery is known for its architecture and frescoes. The visit also offers beautiful views of the Epirus hills.
Near Sivota, this famous beach sits on a small islet reachable on foot by crossing a shallow stretch of sea when conditions allow. Its clear waters and sheltered setting make it an evocative place for an excursion.

Getting around
The center of Igoumenitsa is quite compact and easy to explore on foot, while a car is useful for reaching beaches and nearby towns. Taxis are available in the city and at the port. KTEL buses connect Igoumenitsa with other destinations in the region, but frequencies and timetables may vary. Ferries depart from the port for Corfu and for some destinations in Italy: check schedules in advance and allow extra time for boarding.
When to go
Spring and early autumn offer pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds, and good conditions for exploring the coast and the inland areas. Summer is ideal for the sea, but it can be hot and the port busier, especially during peak ferry periods. Winter is generally quieter and rainier: some tourist services in nearby towns may reduce their hours.
Where to eat
To sample the local cuisine, look for tavernas in the center and along the seafront, where you’ll find fish, seafood, and traditional Greek dishes. In more casual spots you can stop for a meze or a souvlaki; ask which ingredients are fresh that day. In high season, it’s a good idea to book dinner, especially at the most popular restaurants.
Quick tips
- 01If you’re traveling by ferry, book ahead in the summer months and check for any schedule updates before you leave.
- 02Get to the port well in advance: traffic, queues, and boarding procedures can take longer than expected.
- 03If you want to explore beaches and villages outside the city, consider renting a car; check availability and parking conditions in advance.
- 04Bring sun protection and water in summer, and keep some cash handy for small expenses.
Wake up in the right place.
