IerapetraCrete, Lassithi · Greece
One destination.
A thousand ways to live it.
Overlooking the Libyan Sea, Ierapetra is the southernmost city in Greece and an excellent base for exploring the less-traveled side of Crete. With Venetian fortresses, Minoan remains, and turquoise waters, it offers an engaging mix of history and Mediterranean scenery.
Worth seeing, worth remembering.
Housed in a historic building, the collection displays artifacts that tell the story of life in the area from the Minoan age to the Roman period. It is a valuable visit for understanding the region’s many historical layers.
According to tradition, Napoleon Bonaparte spent a night here during the Egyptian campaign in 1798. The small house retains the simple charm of the old quarter and fuels one of the city’s most famous stories.
In the historic center, the mosque bears witness to the Ottoman period and the variety of cultures that have shaped the city. Its presence adds to the distinctive character of the old neighborhood’s alleyways.
This protected island is famous for its pale beaches, crystal-clear sea, and rare cedar forest. In high season, it can be reached by boat tours from Ierapetra; before you go, check the access rules and environmental protection guidelines.
Northeast of Ierapetra lie the remains of a Minoan settlement, with streets, houses, and work areas still visible in the landscape. It is one of the most evocative sites for imagining everyday life in Bronze Age Crete.

Getting around
The center of Ierapetra is easy to explore on foot, between the seafront, the port, and the streets of the old town. KTEL buses connect the city with other destinations in Crete, but services can be infrequent: check schedules and connections before you leave. To explore beaches and inland villages, a rental car offers greater freedom; keep in mind, however, that some roads are narrow and winding. From the port, boat excursions depart for , subject to seasonal schedules and availability.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are ideal for enjoying the mild climate and visiting the surrounding area without the intense heat and summer crowds. Summer is best for those seeking beach days and high temperatures, while winter is generally quieter and some tourist services may have reduced hours. For boat excursions and seasonal activities, always check the latest conditions and schedules.
Where to eat
In the center and along the port you will find taverns and restaurants where you can try fish, mezedes, and Cretan dishes such as dakos, seasonal vegetables, and local cheeses. For a more authentic meal, also look for taverns frequented by locals in the inner streets and nearby villages. Ask what the catch and the products of the day are, and in high season, consider booking in the evening.
Quick tips
- 01In summer, bring water, a hat, and sunscreen: the sun can be intense even during excursions.
- 02If you travel by bus, check the return times: services to smaller places can be limited.
- 03Before booking a trip to Chrissi, check departures, sea conditions, and the access rules currently in force.
- 04To explore beaches and villages outside the city, consider a car and be cautious on the narrow inland roads.
Wake up in the right place.
