This scenic bay at the mouth of a stream is famous for its sunset and for the remains of the ancient sanctuary dedicated to Artemis Tauropolos. The landscape blends sea, vegetation, and history in one of the island’s most enchanting corners.
Framed by high rocky cliffs, it delights visitors with pale pebbles and turquoise water. It is reached by a short steep path, but the bay rewards the descent with an almost secluded atmosphere.

Ikaria is mountainous and the roads are often winding: to explore it with flexibility, a rental car is the most practical solution. Bus connections serve the main towns, but they can be infrequent, especially out of season; check the schedules in advance. The ports of Evdilos and Agios Kirykos connect the island to the mainland and other islands, while the airport is located in the southeastern part. Allow for travel times longer than expected and drive carefully.
From May to June and from September to early October, the weather is generally pleasant and the island is less crowded. July and August are the liveliest months, with hot days, busy beaches, and traditional festivals, the panigiria, that bring the villages to life. In summer, the meltemi can make the sea rough and affect transport: check the forecasts and ferry schedules. Spring is ideal for walks through the green landscapes.
The tavernas in the villages and ports are the right place to sample the local cuisine, often based on seasonal ingredients and home-style recipes. Look for dishes such as soufiko, a stew of vegetables, and specialties with goat, fish, and local cheese, such as kathoura. There is also honey and wine from the island, worth trying when available. In the summer months, it is advisable to book at the more popular places and check opening hours, which may vary.
