Travel by car to the bridge of Polyanthos and the ruins of Anastasioupoli, then spend the afternoon in the Porto Lagos area. The stops are concentrated in the same area, but getting between them makes a car the most practical option. Opening hours for churches and religious sites may vary: it is best to check locally before setting off.

Day 1

Iasmos, Byzantine remains and Vistonida Lagoon

09:00–19:00 Easy walks and short car transfers

Discover the center of Iasmos and the main historical and natural sights in the surrounding area.

09:00

Walk through the center of Iasmos

Set aside about 45 minutes to get your bearings among the village streets and observe the town’s daily life. Stop for a coffee at a place in the center: a simple breakfast costs about 3–7 € per person. You won’t need a car for this first visit.

Iasmos is a quiet town: shops and bars may keep reduced hours, especially outside peak times.

10:00

Historic Bridge of Polyanthos

Drive to the bridge, about 10–15 minutes depending on your starting point and road conditions. Spend 45–60 minutes admiring the stone structure and the Kompsatos River landscape; access to the outdoor area is generally free. Wear shoes with sturdy soles and respect any closures or barriers.

Avoid climbing onto parts of the bridge that are not accessible: surfaces can be uneven and slippery.

11:15

Ruins of Anastasioupoli

Continue by car for about 25–35 minutes to the site of Anastasioupoli, an ancient fortified city also known as Peritheorion. Take a leisurely walk among the visible remains of the walls and try to appreciate the site’s strategic position in relation to the plain and the lagoon. Access to the outdoor area is normally free; since it is not a prepared museum route, allow about an hour and do not expect facilities on site.

Vegetation can make some sections difficult to navigate: long pants and water are useful.

12:30

Lunch near Iasmos

Stop at a taverna in Iasmos or in one of the settlements along the way. A simple meal with a main course and a drink can cost about 12–22 € per person; if available, try local specialties and Thracian products. Allow about 75 minutes for a relaxed meal.

In Greece, lunch may start later: if you find a place closed, ask around in the village to see which businesses are open.

14:00

First scenic stop on Lake Vistonida

Drive to an accessible point on the shore or wetland near Porto Lagos, allowing about 25–35 minutes from the center of Iasmos. Spend 45 minutes enjoying the landscape of water, reeds, and fields: the lagoon is important for birdlife, and sightings vary with the season. This nature stop is free; bring binoculars and a telephoto lens if you have them.

Stay on the trails and in the designated areas, without getting close to nests or disturbing the birds.

15:00

Agios Nikolaos Monastery in Porto Lagos

Visit the religious complex linked to the lagoon, reachable in just a few minutes by car from the scenic area. Admire the chapels and the evocative setting over the water, while behaving respectfully: access to the interior spaces may depend on service times and the decisions of the monastic community. There is usually no entrance fee; any donations are optional.

Wear modest clothing and check the opening hours on site, as they may change.

16:30

Walk and birdwatching in Porto Lagos

Wrap up your visit with a peaceful walk around Porto Lagos and one last look at the lagoon, without leaving the accessible areas. Allow 60–90 minutes, with a break for a drink or snack of around 3–8 €. The late-afternoon light can enhance the landscape, but sightings depend on the season and weather conditions.

If you’re driving back after sunset, keep in mind that secondary roads may be poorly lit.

Practical tips

  • To cover all the stops at a reasonable pace, plan the day with a car: public transport links to rural sites can be limited.
  • Download an offline map and check the route before setting off, because access to the ruins and riverbanks is not always clearly signposted.
  • In summer, bring water, a hat, and sunscreen: the bridge and archaeological site offer little shade.
  • Respect local guidance at the monastery and the lagoon, and do not leave litter or approach the wildlife.
