Getting around
The metro is convenient for reaching the city center, the railway station, and several areas around ; from Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport, you can also get into the city by metro. Buses and shared bicycles complete the network, but using them may require setting up a local payment app. Around the lake, walking is often the best option: distances are wide and traffic can slow down buses. Taxis and chauffeur-driven cars can be booked through apps and are practical, especially in the evening or when you have luggage.
When to go
Spring and autumn are generally the most pleasant times, with mild temperatures and especially beautiful scenery around . Spring brings blossoms, but it can be rainy; from late spring to early summer, heavy rains are common. Summer is hot and humid, while winter is cool and sometimes gray. To enjoy the most famous sights with fewer crowds, it is best to avoid Chinese national holidays.
Where to eat
To sample the local cuisine, look for Dongpo pork, Longjing tea shrimp, and fish in sweet and sour sauce, available in traditional restaurants. The streets around Qinghefang and Hubin offer plenty of options, from local eateries to more modern restaurants; in the tea plantation areas, you’ll also find tea houses and countryside cooking. For a more casual meal, try the small restaurants frequented by locals, where it’s common to order several dishes to share.
