Juárez Theater

An elegant 19th-century theater, it stands out for its monumental facade and richly decorated interiors. It is one of the city's most recognizable cultural symbols.

Alhóndiga de Granaditas

A towering historic building tied to the early battles of the Mexican War of Independence. Today it houses the Regional Museum of Guanajuato, with collections of art and history.

Pípila Monument

The huge statue dominates the city from a spectacular viewpoint, also reachable by funicular. From here you can admire the colorful rooftops and the hills that embrace Guanajuato.

Basilica Collegiate Church of Our Lady of Guanajuato

This Baroque basilica, recognizable by its yellow facade and red towers, overlooks the central Plaza de la Paz. Inside, it houses a revered image of the Virgin.

Alley of the Kiss

This famous alley, known for its balconies that nearly touch, is tied to a romantic local legend. Its narrowness and colorful facades make it one of the city's most photographed spots.

An unusual museum known throughout Mexico, it displays naturally mummified bodies and explains the special conditions that helped preserve them. The visit offers a striking look at local history.

The city takes shape.

BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

How to get around

The historic center is best explored on foot: alleyways, stairways, and steep climbs make comfortable shoes essential. The city is crossed by galleries and tunnels, some reserved for traffic, so follow the signs and be careful when crossing. For longer distances, you can use city buses or taxis; agree on the fare before setting off if the meter is not running. If you arrive by car, it’s more practical to leave it in a parking lot and continue on foot.

When to go

From November to April, the climate is generally drier, with mild days and cool evenings. From May to October, rain is possible, often in the afternoon. In October, the Festival Internacional Cervantino takes place: the atmosphere is lively, but accommodations and restaurants fill up, so it’s wise to book ahead.

Where to eat

To taste the local cuisine, look for enchiladas mineras, tortillas stuffed and topped with sauce, potatoes, and carrots. Mercado Hidalgo is a good stop for simple dishes and regional specialties, while around Jardín Unión you’ll find restaurants and cafés. For an informal meal, also explore the places along the central streets and ask what the daily specialties are.

Quick tips

  1. Guanajuato is located at an altitude of about 2,000 meters: take your time to adjust, especially on the first day.
  2. Bring shoes with a comfortable, non-slip sole: the center is hilly and many alleys are cobblestoned.
  3. Keep small bills and coins with you for buses, markets, and low-cost purchases.
  4. During the Cervantino Festival, book accommodation and, if possible, restaurants well in advance.
