Getting around
Giurgiu’s city center is easy to explore on foot, especially when moving between the main squares and the riverside promenade. For longer trips, you can use taxis or city buses, checking updated routes and timetables on site. The city is connected to Ruse, in Bulgaria, by the Friendship Bridge over the Danube: before you set off, check for any tolls, waiting times, and required documents. Connections with Bucharest can also vary, so it’s a good idea to confirm train or bus schedules in advance.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are the most pleasant times to stroll around the city and along the Danube, with generally mild temperatures. Summer can be very hot, while in winter the days are cold and sometimes windy. If you travel in the summer months, bring water and sunscreen.
Where to eat
In the restaurants in the center, you can sample Romanian cuisine, such as soups, grilled meats, and pork-based dishes. Given its location on the Danube, it’s also worth looking for river fish, asking which species are available that day.
