Giannina’s historic center is easy to explore on foot, among the lakeside promenade, the castle, and the streets of the center. To reach farther neighborhoods, you can use city buses or taxis. Intercity services operated by KTEL connect the city with other places in Greece; check schedules and stops in advance, especially on weekends. A car is useful for exploring the surroundings, but parking can be less convenient in the center.
Spring and early autumn are pleasant times to stroll by the lake and visit the surrounding area, with generally mild temperatures. Bring a waterproof layer in every season and check the forecast before you set out.
To sample the cuisine of Epirus, look for tavernas in the historic center and around the castle: they often serve traditional savory pies, local cheeses, and meat dishes. Along the lake, you’ll also find places serving fish and regional specialties, including frogs, a distinctive option that isn’t to everyone’s taste. Ask which ingredients are in season and check opening hours: some restaurants may close between lunch and dinner.
