Getting around
Egina can be reached by ferry from Piraeus, with more frequent connections in the high season; check timetables and the arrival port before you set off. Once on the island, you can get around by bus between Aegina Town and some of the main places, but services may be limited outside summer. Taxis and rental cars are convenient for reaching beaches and archaeological sites that are less well served. Scooters and ATVs are another option, but ride them carefully and check the road conditions and insurance coverage.
When to go
From May to June and from September to early October, you’ll find mild days, pleasant sea temperatures, and fewer crowds than in peak season. July and August are ideal for anyone seeking a lively summer atmosphere, but they can be very hot and require booking ferries and accommodation well in advance. In winter, the island is quieter and some tourist services may have reduced hours.
Where to eat
In Aegina Town and the seaside villages, you’ll find tavernas serving fish, seafood, and traditional Greek dishes. Look for places popular with locals and ask what the daily specials are, especially when it comes to the catch of the day. The island is famous for pistachios: try them plain or in sweets and local products.
Quick tips
- 01Book the ferry in advance if you’re traveling in summer or on the weekend.
- 02Check the bus timetables and don’t assume there will be frequent evening services.
- 03Bring comfortable shoes and sunscreen for visiting archaeological sites and beaches.
- 04Buy pistachios from trusted sellers and check that the package shows their origin.
Wake up in the right place.
